The test involves argument and buffer numbers. Therefore it was necessary to
use a custom testing session to ensure that the initial buffer corresponds to
an argument.
Plugins (YCM, dispatch.vim) use gui_running to decide behavior; so do
some colorschemes. Up to now, nvim lied about gui_running for the
benefit of colorschemes and the detriment of all _other_ plugins that
check this condition. That's counterproductive: a user employs at most
_one_ colorscheme but may use many other plugins which expect the Vim
legacy semantics of gui_running.
Moreover, colorschemes usually don't _need_ to check gui_running: they
can instead set cterm{fg,bg} and gui{fg,bg} in the same :highlight call.
It is reasonable for users who want "true color" to modify their
colorscheme once (or request upstream to do so) in order to avoid
running into quirks in any other plugins.

As the work of this migration did take quite some time, some changes where
made in master after this branch was started. These are ported to the new
test file.
The old test_eval.in file did a `:wq` on line 168. The following 60 lines
where not used and there was no expected output for them in test_eval.ok.
This test code is now used in several test cases in the new test file.
This is consistent with VIM behavior. When showing a visual selection,
VIM only extends it past the last character if eol is in listchars (even
if nolist is set).

When converting a msgpack object to a String object, strings (and byte
arrays) with length 0 are handled as errors. This is fixed by
always using the msgpack data pointer as a valid pointer. For a NULL
pointer there is nothing to copy.

This change adds switch cases for K_FOCUSGAINED and K_FOCUSLOST to the
input handling functions in ex_getln.c and terminal.c. The handling is
identical to what's found in edit.c (just calling apply_autocmds).
If one enters cmdline-mode by feeding `:` and sends a focuslost event (by
leaving the window for example) the text `<FocusLost>` will be inserted
into the command line. There is similar behaviour in terminal mode. This
patch corrects this behavior to fire the apropriate autocmd instead.

Refactor input.c, normal.c and edit.c to use the K_EVENT special key to trigger
the CURSORHOLD event. In normal and edit mode, K_EVENT is treated as
K_CURSORHOLD, which enables better handling of arbitrary actions in those
states(eg: In normal mode the previous operator counts will be restored).
Also fix a test in vim_spec.lua. The test had a wrong assumption: cmdheight is
only used to determine when the press enter screen will be shown, not to limit
how many lines or control pagination.
Problem: Moving the cursor in Insert mode starts new undo sequence.
Solution: Add CTRL-G U to keep the undo sequence for the following

- Add helpers.funcs and helpers.\*meths special tables. Indexing such table
creates functions which call helpers.call or helpers.nvim (and similar) with
first argument equal to table index.
This problem made test64 to crash. Description of the bug: when removing entry
from history when removed entry is not the last one it puts one element to
free_entries list, but ignores free entries starting from last_free_element.
Possible solutions:
1. First working: simply populate free_entries list with entries which are still
free, starting from last_free_element.
2. Better (wastes less CPU): after free_entries list size goes to zero (which is
the initial value) continue using last_free_element.
3. Even better (less memory): note that element from the list is *only* removed
before adding another one. So replace free_entries array with one item.
Also renamed last_free_element to last_free_entry: in any case most of the lines
which mention it were altered.
It appears that large portion of non-ShaDa ASCII text files may be parsed as
a ShaDa file because it is mostly recognized as a sequence of unknown entries:
all ASCII non-control characters are recognized as FIXUINT shada objects, so
text like
#!/bin/sh
powerline "$@" 2>&1 | tee -a powerline
(with trailing newline) will be recognized as a correct ShaDa file containing
single unknown entry with type 0x23 (dec 35, '#'), timestamp 0x21 (dec 33, '!')
and length 0x2F (dec 47, '/') without this commit. With it parsing this entry
will fail.
For compatibility the following things are done:
1. Items with type greater then greatest type are ignored when reading and
copied when writing.
2. Registers with unknown name are ignored when reading and blindly copied when
writing.
3. Registers with unknown type are ignored when reading and merged as usual when
writing.
4. Local and global marks with unknown names are ignored when reading. When
writing global marks are blindly copied and local marks are also blindly
copied, but only if file they are attached to fits in the `'N` limit defined
in &shada. Unknown local mark’s timestamp is also taken into account when
calculating which files exactly should fit into this limit.
5. History items with unknown type are ignored when reading and blindly copied
when writing.
6. Unknown keys found in register, local marks, global marks, changes, jumps and
search pattern entries are read to additional_data Dictionary and dumped (of
course, unless any of these elements were not overwritten later). It
obviously works only for values conversible to Object type.
7. Additional elements found in replacement string and history entries are read
to additional_elements Array and dumped (same: only if they were not
overwritten later). Again this works only for elements conversible to Object
type.
8. Additional elements found in variable entries are simply ignored when
reading. When writing *new* variables they will be preserved during merging,
but that’s all. Variable values dumped from current NeoVim session never have
additional elements.
Modifications:
- If file was not written due to write error then writing stops and temporary
file will not be renamed.
- If NeoVim detects that target file is not a ShaDa file then temporary file
will not be renamed.
Some notes:
- Replaced msgpack_unpacker usage with regular xmalloc’ed buffer. Also since
msgpack_unpack_next (as well as msgpack_unpacker_next) is not ever going to
return MSGPACK_UNPACK_EXTRA_BYTES this condition was checked manually.
Function that does return this status is msgpack_unpack, but it is marked as
obsolete.
- Zero type is checked prior to main switch in shada_read_next_item because
otherwise check would be skipped.
- Zeroing entry at the start of shada_read_next_item makes it safer.
- dedent('') does not work.
- v:oldfiles list is only replaced with bang, if it is NULL or empty.
What works:
1. ShaDa file dumping: header, registers, jump list, history, search patterns,
substitute strings, variables.
2. ShaDa file reading: registers, global marks, variables.
Most was not tested.
TODO:
1. Merging.
2. Reading history, local marks, jump and buffer lists.
3. Documentation update.
4. Converting some data from &encoding.
5. Safer variant of dumping viminfo (dump to temporary file then rename).
6. Removing old viminfo code (currently masked with `#if 0` in a ShaDa file for
reference).
Add a new special key that can be used by UIs to toggle the 'paste' option and
use it in the TUI instead of the user's 'pastetoggle' value.

now. The issue crops up most on the QB OS X node, but it has
periodically occurred under other nodes too.

This is a port of my original contribution to Vim, added in 7.4.687
(https://github.com/vim/vim/commit/v7-4-687). The TUI code has been
heavily refactored (see esp. 25ceadab37),
so this required some translation, but the logic is the same.
Currently, there are two functions in the UI API that are called when
the mode changes: insert_mode() and normal_mode(). These can be folded
into a single mode_change() entrypoint which can do whatever it wants
based on the mode it is passed, limited to INSERT and NORMAL for now.
A menu item can have separate bindings for each Vim mode.
:emenu checks to see which binding it should execute. But, it assumes
it can only be called from Normal mode, so its mode detection is based
on some guesswork. For instance, it detects if you've just used C-O
and, if so, uses the Insert mode binding.
Now that :emenu can be called from any mode (via vim_command), this
commit has it check the actual mode we're in, and simply use the
binding for that mode if we aren't in Normal mode.
The test is also split in several blocks and heavily modernized. This was
done to prevent the following quoting and escaping problems during migration:
- the vim command `put =...` treats double quotes as the start of a comment so
they have to be escaped with a backslash
- when inserting control characters on the command line they have to be
escaped with <C-V>
The parts one and two of the test are functional identical so they are wrapped
in a local function. The only difference was which letters where used to test
the same feature.
Part six did test a flag in 'cpoptions' that has been removed in neovim. It
has therefore been removed as well.

os.remove() wasn't removing the temporary swap directory which leads to
problems when the test is run a second time.
That's also the reason why the CI never caught this.
os.remove() got replaced by helpers.rmdir().
- lfs.rmdir() only removes empty directories
- os.remove() supercedes lfs.rmdir(); removes files and empty directories
- helpers.rmdir() first removes all files within a directory, then the
directory itself
Since sleep is a grandchild of nvim, it is not killed after the test ends.
Using a low sleep value allows it to exit automatically after a small interval.
- use eval() and eq() in many places instead of writing to the buffer
- remove has('autocmd') checks and use corresponding code unconditionally as
neovim always has the autocmd feature
- split the test into several it() blocks

This is the part of the test that relies on wall clock time and sometimes
fails if the system is under load. The test is repeated up to three times
before a failure is reported to the user.
:undojoin can only be used inside scripts and command chains. So it has to be
tested inside an explicit `source()` call.
Also add a new test case for the different behavior when sourceing normal mode
commands from a script or inserting them interactively.
The legacy test uses `set ul=100` to break the changes into blocks that can be
undone separately. This is needed because the legacy test is sourced from a
file and changes would be grouped into on undo block by default. The lua test
suite does not have this restriction.
Also add a new test case to test this effect of using `set ul=100` in a
sourced script.
This test is real time based as it also tests the `:earlier` and `:later`
commands with time arguments (using `:sleep`). This can sometimes case the
test to fail on systems that are under heavy load or where the time interval
between creating the expected buffer state and the `:earlier` or `:later`
command that tries to jump to it changes.
To be system independent we use nvim's `:sleep` command and `wait()` for it in
the test suit.
The legacy vim test writes to test.out a lot with `:.w >>test.out`. This
does currently not work in the lua test suite so the test is modernized to use
busted's assertions instead of the output file.
This test was treated special in the legacy Makefile but after the conversion
the related code can be removed.

Previously, the screen test was expecting the screen state to be
identical to the previous screen test in `thelpers.screen_setup()`,
which is indeterministic. (The later screen test can accidentally
still see the previous identical state). The solution is to add a test
for a intermediate different state.
For any of these functions, if {cmd} is a string, execute
"&shell &shellcmdflag '{cmd}'", or simply {cmd} if it's a list.
In termopen(), if the 'name' option is not supplied, try to guess using
'{cmd}' (string) or {cmd}[0] (list). Simplify ex_terminal to use the
string form of termopen().

Old behaviour: termopen('cmd') would run `&shell &shcf "cmd"`, which
caused the functional tests to fail on some systems due to the process
not "owning" the terminal. Also, it is inconsistent with jobstart().
Modify termopen() so that &shell is not invoked, but maintain the old
behaviour with :terminal. Factor the common code for building the
argument vector from jobstart() and modify the functional tests to call
termopen() instead of :terminal (fixes#2354).
Also:
* Add a 'name' option for termopen() so that `:terminal {cmd}` produces
a buffer named "term//{cwd}/{cmd}" and termopen() users can customize
the name.
* Update the documentation.
* Add functional tests for `:terminal` sinse its behaviour now differs
from termopen(). Add "test/functional/fixtures/shell-test.c" and move
"test/functional/job/tty-test.c" there, too.

Pressing <C-\> and then a mouse click will insert the click into the
terminal as if a keyboard button had been pressed.
Keep track of whether the last input was <C-\> and only call
terminal_send_key() if the next input is a key press.
While in a terminal and insert mode, if an event caused loss of focus,
nvim would stay in the terminal event loop causing an inconsistent view
of internal state and/or segfault.
Remove the "term" argument from terminal_enter() as it only makes sense
to call it with curbuf->terminal. Terminate the loop when switched to a
different buffer.

Even though assuming nvim is busy most times is simpler, it has a problem: A lot
of unnecessary busy_start/busy_stop notifications are sent to the UI. That's
because in the majority of scenarios almost no time is spent between
`event_poll` calls.
This restores the normal behavior which is to call busy_start only when nvim is
going to perform some task that can take a significant amount of time. Also
improve the usage of buffering in the TUI when changing the cursor state.
Switching cursor off is only necessary in two occasions:
- When redrawing to avoid terminal flickering
- When the editor is busy
The first can now be handled by the TUI, so most calls to ui_cursor_off can be
removed from the core.
So, before this commit it was only necessary to switch the cursor off to notify
the user that nvim was running some long operation. Now the cursor_{on,off}
functions have been replaced by busy_{stop,start} which can be handled in a
UI-specific way(turning the cursor off or showing a busy indicator, for
example).
To make things even more simpler, nvim is always busy except when waiting for
user input or other asynchronous events: It automatically switches to a non-busy
state when the event loop is about to be entered for more than 100 milliseconds.
`ui_busy_start` can be called when its not desired to change the busy state in
the event loop (As its now done by functions that perform blocking shell
invocations).
- After _spec suffix was added so busted could find the test, it failed.
- The original legacy test wrote to a "test.out", but the new test uses
register @A.
- Original test did not contain 1d and new test shouldn't either.

It turns out that Busted started cleaning the environment in 2.0rc5 as a
result of Olivine-Labs/busted#62. This, in turn, caused the ffi module
to be reloaded for each spec file, and LuaJIT doesn't appreciate it.
The net effect is an assertion error in LuaJIT.
By using the --helper feature of Busted, we can pre-load some modules
ahead of Busted and prevent it from reloading them--making LuaJIT happy
again.
This is necessary for newer versions of Busted, otherwise assert will be
nil and the tests will die.
Note: this does not mean the tests now work with the latest Busted.
There are still several issues preventing that from happening.
- Removed term.c, term.h and term_defs.h
- Tests for T_* values were removed. screen.c was simplified as a
consequence(the best strategy for drawing is implemented in the UI layer)
- Redraw functions now call ui.c functions directly. Updates are flushed with
`ui_flush()`
- Removed all termcap options(they now return empty strings for compatibility)
- &term/&ttybuiltin options return a constant value(nvim)
- &t_Co is still available, but it mirrors t_colors directly
- Remove cursor tracking from screen.c and the `screen_start` function. Now the
UI is expected to maintain cursor state across any call, and reset it when
resized.
- Remove unused code
- The syntax `gui=` is invalid when setting properties of highlight group.
- Wait for the initial "-- More --" prompt before continuing. Required to avoid
a race condition
Some screen tests such as system/ctrl+c(viml_system_spec.lua) can take some time
to respond(default kill timeout is 2 seconds for an interrupted job) and fail
when running under a slow environment such as travis.
The `system` function is never executed with these tests because the ctrl+c is
queued with the input string that calls it(The `process_interrupts` function
will destroy all previous input when a ctrl+c is found).
The systemlist test currently calls the `echo` command which can potentially
complete before being interrupted, causing random test failures.
Use `yes | xargs` instead. A `yes` invocation that is not piped through `xargs`
can produce a huge amount of lines in a very short time, leading memory
starvation when the result is being converted into a list. `xargs` ensures only
one line of output will be produced while allowing interrupt to be tested.
`job_send` is non-blocking and can potentially fail due to the following
`job_stop` call. Since we can't reliably verify that the "exit" event is only
sent after the "stdout" event, mark the test as pending and fix after we can
get a notification about `job_send` status.
The test was hoping to not find a tags file, but didn't actively guard
against it. In my case, I had a tags file present which was causing
different output to be generated. To fix this, let's set the tags
option to look for an unlikely filename.
While running under valgrind, the screen can take significantly longer to
update(especially on travis) so a higher timeout can be required. Also reduce
the timeout when not running on valgrind.
When a test that fails leaves nvim in a 'Press Enter...' state, the whole suite
will hang because the `qa!` command executed before the next test won't be
processed until '<enter>' is sent.
Now the lua client can send a signal with when `Session:exit()` is called, so
the `qa!` request is no longer necessary.
Also:
- Set noswapfile at startup to prevent tests from leaving .s* swap files(should
also improve test environment determinism)
- Use `assert(false, msg) instead of `error(msg)` to report screen assertion
failures.
Problem: In Insert mode, after inserting a newline that inserts a comment
leader, CTRL-O moves to the right. (ZyX) Issue 57.
Solution: Correct the condition for moving the cursor back to the NUL.

While we're at, using the slightly more portable `command -v` technique
to detect the executable. Also, there's no need to use `io.popen()` if
we aren't going to record the path. Instead, let's use the simpler
`os.execute()` to detect the presence of xclip.
In Lua, all math is floating point. We need to coerce the result of a
division into a integer with the `{get,set}_height` and
`{get,set}_width` window_spec functional tests.
The $GDB env var can be set to run tests under gdbserver. If $VALGRIND is also
set, it will add the --vgdb=yes command-line option to valgrind instead of
starting gdbserver.

Cause : In OSX, /tmp is a symbolic link to /private/tmp, which causes
expected and got results different because of implicit
resolution.
Solution : Resolve path before setting expected value.
Nvim wasn't exiting cleanly in some job tests due to errors.
This can't be noticed until the next commit, which will perform a refactoring to
selectively process K_EVENT, so the `qa!` command executed at the end of each
test blocks forever if there are errors which require the user to press ENTER(in
that state Nvim no longer will process events).
The vim_input function accepts raw terminal input and so is better to emulate
real user, especially because it is not deferred as vim_feedkeys.
Using this function required a number of changes:
- expect() was refactored to use curbuf_contents()
- The vim_eval function in request() was moved to curbuf_contents(). For most
cases this is enough(we only care for synchronizing api calls with user input
when verifying buffer contents).
- <C-@>(NUL) is preprocessed before being passed to replace_termcodes.
- Legacy test 4 had a bug that only became visible when using vim_input, it is
fixed now.
- An extra blank line deletion was required for test 101
The last two items show that vim_feedkeys because it is not 100% equivalent to
receiving terminal input.
Commit @45525853d352 removed usage of the `job_write_cb` for closing stdin due
to a memory error, but that doesn't work anymore because `job_close_in` closes
stdin immediately, possibly trimming input data before it is fully written.
Since most memory issues with jobs have been fixed, re-add the `job_write_cb`
call to ensure stdin is only closed when it should. Also add tests for scenarios
where using the callback makes a difference.
Tests which spin the event loop and stop it in a notification handler have a
chance of re-entering the event loop due to the `vim_eval` call in the
`request()` helper(assuming the request call is what triggered the
notification). Since this will cause an error to be thrown by the lua client,
don't send the extra `vim_eval` request when the loop has been stopped.
Use save_tv_as_string(), same as vimL system(). This also makes
jobsend() more liberal in what it can accept. For example,
`jobsend(j, 123)` is now valid.
Closes#1176
Factor out string_to_list() from f_system()'s implementation
and use that to set job_data. This has the technical advantage of
preserving NULs, and may be more convenient for users.
Required for #1176.
During test setup, we used to call a vimscript function(BeforeEachTest) that
attempted to restore Nvim to it's initial state as much as possible in order to
provide a clean environment for running new tests. This approach has proven to
be unreliable, as some tests leave state that can affect other tests, eventually
causing failures that are difficult to debug.
This commit changes the 'clear' function so it will restart Nvim every time it
is called, which is a slower, but more reliable solution that will simplify
spotting bugs in the future.
Some other improvements/fixes were also performed:
- Whenever an error is detected in a handler passed to "run()", the event loop
will be stopped and the error will be propagated to the main thread.
- Errors and the "cleanup()" function will always send a quit command to the
current Nvim instance. This should prevent memory starvation when running
tests under valgrind(where each Nvim instance can consume a lot of memory).
- Fixed a wrong assertion in server_requests_spec.lua. Previously the failure
was undetected in a notification handler.
- Fixed some tests to expect fully clean registers. The deleted cleanup function
used to put an empty string in every register, but that resulted in a extra
line being added.
It is currently possible for a client to send a response that doesn't match the
current server->client request(at the top of the stack). This commit fixes that
by delaying notifications to until the first `channel_send_call` invocation
returns.
Also remove the "call stack" size check, vim will already break if the call
stack goes too deep.
The options_spec.lua suite has one purpose: Check if the :options commands will
throw any exception(:options is implemented by $VIMRUNTIME/optwin.vim). For this
it is best to use the `vim_command` API function since it will automatically
catch exceptions and forward them via msgpack-rpc.
Also, the option window seems to affect other tests, so call `restart` in the
teardown hook.
Since the introduction of the FOR_ALL_BUFFERS macro, 'sign unplace id'
without a buffer was only removing the sign from the first buffer rather
than all buffers, as described in the documentation.

- Move the cleanup function definition into `restart()` so restart can be
selectively used as a hook
- Improve error handling: Before this, errors while running the event loop would
cause busted to get stuck. Now the error is properly raised by stopping the
event loop first.
It's possible that a child process won't close it's standard streams, even after
it exits. This can be evidenced with the "xclip" program:
:call system('xclip -i -selection clipboard', 'DATA')
Before this commit, the above command wouldn't return, even though the xclip
program had exited. That is because `xclip` wasn't closing it's stdout/stderr
streams, which would block pending_refs from ever reaching 0.
Now the job.c module was refactored to ensure all streams are closed when the
uv_process_t handle is closed.
Sanity API checks made by the python-client in the api-python travis target were
converted to lua and will now live in this repository. This will simplify
performing breaking changes to the API as it won't be necessary to send parallel
PRs the python-client.
Now that the lua client is available, python/lupa are no longer necessary to run
the functional tests. The helper functions previously defined in
run-functional-tests.py were adapted to test/functional/helpers.lua.
Busted can only discover tests from a single directory. In order to allow tests
under 'legacy' to run as a functional test, it needed to be moved to
'test/functional'.
The 'lupa' python package provides a simple way to seamless integrate lua and
python code.
This commit replaces vroom by a python script that exposes the 'neovim' package
to a lua state, and invokes busted to run functional tests. This is a temporary
solution that will enable writing functional tests using lua/bused while a lua
client library is not available.
The reason for dropping vroom is flexibility: Lua/busted has a nice DSL-style
syntax while also providing the customization power of a full programming
language. Another reason is to use a single framework for unit/functional tests.
Two other changes were performed in this commit:
- Instead of "gcc-unittest/gcc-ia32", the travis builds for gcc are now
identified by "gcc/gcc-32". They will run unit/functional tests for both 64
and 32 bits.
- Old integration tests(in src/nvim/testdir) are now ran by the 'oldtest' target
