fbc90c042c - 875fa64577da ("mm/hugetlb_vmemmap: fix race with speculative PFN
walkers") is known to cause a performance regression
   (https://lore.kernel.org/all/3acefad9-96e5-4681-8014-827d6be71c7a@linux.ibm.com/T/#mfa809800a7862fb5bdf834c6f71a3a5113eb83ff).
   Yu has a fix which I'll send along later via the hotfixes branch.

 - In the series "mm: Avoid possible overflows in dirty throttling" Jan
   Kara addresses a couple of issues in the writeback throttling code.
   These fixes are also targetted at -stable kernels.

 - Ryusuke Konishi's series "nilfs2: fix potential issues related to
   reserved inodes" does that. This should actually be in the
   mm-nonmm-stable tree, along with the many other nilfs2 patches. My bad.

 - More folio conversions from Kefeng Wang in the series "mm: convert to
   folio_alloc_mpol()"

 - Kemeng Shi has sent some cleanups to the writeback code in the series
   "Add helper functions to remove repeated code and improve readability of
   cgroup writeback"

 - Kairui Song has made the swap code a little smaller and a little
   faster in the series "mm/swap: clean up and optimize swap cache index".

 - In the series "mm/memory: cleanly support zeropage in
   vm_insert_page*(), vm_map_pages*() and vmf_insert_mixed()" David
   Hildenbrand has reworked the rather sketchy handling of the use of the
   zeropage in MAP_SHARED mappings. I don't see any runtime effects here -
   more a cleanup/understandability/maintainablity thing.

 - Dev Jain has improved selftests/mm/va_high_addr_switch.c's handling of
   higher addresses, for aarch64. The (poorly named) series is
   "Restructure va_high_addr_switch".

 - The core TLB handling code gets some cleanups and possible slight
   optimizations in Bang Li's series "Add update_mmu_tlb_range() to
   simplify code".

 - Jane Chu has improved the handling of our
   fake-an-unrecoverable-memory-error testing feature MADV_HWPOISON in the
   series "Enhance soft hwpoison handling and injection".

 - Jeff Johnson has sent a billion patches everywhere to add
   MODULE_DESCRIPTION() to everything. Some landed in this pull.

 - In the series "mm: cleanup MIGRATE_SYNC_NO_COPY mode", Kefeng Wang has
   simplified migration's use of hardware-offload memory copying.

 - Yosry Ahmed performs more folio API conversions in his series "mm:
   zswap: trivial folio conversions".

 - In the series "large folios swap-in: handle refault cases first",
   Chuanhua Han inches us forward in the handling of large pages in the
   swap code. This is a cleanup and optimization, working toward the end
   objective of full support of large folio swapin/out.

 - In the series "mm,swap: cleanup VMA based swap readahead window
   calculation", Huang Ying has contributed some cleanups and a possible
   fixlet to his VMA based swap readahead code.

 - In the series "add mTHP support for anonymous shmem" Baolin Wang has
   taught anonymous shmem mappings to use multisize THP. By default this
   is a no-op - users must opt in vis sysfs controls. Dramatic
   improvements in pagefault latency are realized.

 - David Hildenbrand has some cleanups to our remaining use of
   page_mapcount() in the series "fs/proc: move page_mapcount() to
   fs/proc/internal.h".

 - David also has some highmem accounting cleanups in the series
   "mm/highmem: don't track highmem pages manually".

 - Build-time fixes and cleanups from John Hubbard in the series
   "cleanups, fixes, and progress towards avoiding "make headers"".

 - Cleanups and consolidation of the core pagemap handling from Barry
   Song in the series "mm: introduce pmd|pte_needs_soft_dirty_wp helpers
   and utilize them".

 - Lance Yang's series "Reclaim lazyfree THP without splitting" has
   reduced the latency of the reclaim of pmd-mapped THPs under fairly
   common circumstances. A 10x speedup is seen in a microbenchmark.

   It does this by punting to aother CPU but I guess that's a win unless
   all CPUs are pegged.

 - hugetlb_cgroup cleanups from Xiu Jianfeng in the series
   "mm/hugetlb_cgroup: rework on cftypes".

 - Miaohe Lin's series "Some cleanups for memory-failure" does just that
   thing.

 - Is anyone reading this stuff? If so, email me!

 - Someone other than SeongJae has developed a DAMON feature in Honggyu
   Kim's series "DAMON based tiered memory management for CXL memory".
   This adds DAMON features which may be used to help determine the
   efficiency of our placement of CXL/PCIe attached DRAM.

 - DAMON user API centralization and simplificatio work in SeongJae
   Park's series "mm/damon: introduce DAMON parameters online commit
   function".

 - In the series "mm: page_type, zsmalloc and page_mapcount_reset()"
   David Hildenbrand does some maintenance work on zsmalloc - partially
   modernizing its use of pageframe fields.

 - Kefeng Wang provides more folio conversions in the series "mm: remove
   page_maybe_dma_pinned() and page_mkclean()".

 - More cleanup from David Hildenbrand, this time in the series
   "mm/memory_hotplug: use PageOffline() instead of PageReserved() for
   !ZONE_DEVICE". It "enlightens memory hotplug more about PageOffline()
   pages" and permits the removal of some virtio-mem hacks.

 - Barry Song's series "mm: clarify folio_add_new_anon_rmap() and
   __folio_add_anon_rmap()" is a cleanup to the anon folio handling in
   preparation for mTHP (multisize THP) swapin.

 - Kefeng Wang's series "mm: improve clear and copy user folio"
   implements more folio conversions, this time in the area of large folio
   userspace copying.

 - The series "Docs/mm/damon/maintaier-profile: document a mailing tool
   and community meetup series" tells people how to get better involved
   with other DAMON developers. From SeongJae Park.

 - A large series ("kmsan: Enable on s390") from Ilya Leoshkevich does
   that.

 - David Hildenbrand sends along more cleanups, this time against the
   migration code. The series is "mm/migrate: move NUMA hinting fault
   folio isolation + checks under PTL".

 - Jan Kara has found quite a lot of strangenesses and minor errors in
   the readahead code. He addresses this in the series "mm: Fix various
   readahead quirks".

 - SeongJae Park's series "selftests/damon: test DAMOS tried regions and
   {min,max}_nr_regions" adds features and addresses errors in DAMON's self
   testing code.

 - Gavin Shan has found a userspace-triggerable WARN in the pagecache
   code. The series "mm/filemap: Limit page cache size to that supported
   by xarray" addresses this. The series is marked cc:stable.

 - Chengming Zhou's series "mm/ksm: cmp_and_merge_page() optimizations
   and cleanup" cleans up and slightly optimizes KSM.

 - Roman Gushchin has separated the memcg-v1 and memcg-v2 code - lots of
   code motion. The series (which also makes the memcg-v1 code
   Kconfigurable) are

   "mm: memcg: separate legacy cgroup v1 code and put under config
   option" and
   "mm: memcg: put cgroup v1-specific memcg data under CONFIG_MEMCG_V1"

 - Dan Schatzberg's series "Add swappiness argument to memory.reclaim"
   adds an additional feature to this cgroup-v2 control file.

 - The series "Userspace controls soft-offline pages" from Jiaqi Yan
   permits userspace to stop the kernel's automatic treatment of excessive
   correctable memory errors. In order to permit userspace to monitor and
   handle this situation.

 - Kefeng Wang's series "mm: migrate: support poison recover from migrate
   folio" teaches the kernel to appropriately handle migration from
   poisoned source folios rather than simply panicing.

 - SeongJae Park's series "Docs/damon: minor fixups and improvements"
   does those things.

 - In the series "mm/zsmalloc: change back to per-size_class lock"
   Chengming Zhou improves zsmalloc's scalability and memory utilization.

 - Vivek Kasireddy's series "mm/gup: Introduce memfd_pin_folios() for
   pinning memfd folios" makes the GUP code use FOLL_PIN rather than bare
   refcount increments. So these paes can first be moved aside if they
   reside in the movable zone or a CMA block.

 - Andrii Nakryiko has added a binary ioctl()-based API to /proc/pid/maps
   for much faster reading of vma information. The series is "query VMAs
   from /proc/<pid>/maps".

 - In the series "mm: introduce per-order mTHP split counters" Lance Yang
   improves the kernel's presentation of developer information related to
   multisize THP splitting.

 - Michael Ellerman has developed the series "Reimplement huge pages
   without hugepd on powerpc (8xx, e500, book3s/64)". This permits
   userspace to use all available huge page sizes.

 - In the series "revert unconditional slab and page allocator fault
   injection calls" Vlastimil Babka removes a performance-affecting and not
   very useful feature from slab fault injection.

Merge tag 'slab-for-6.11' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vbabka/slab

Pull slab updates from Vlastimil Babka:
 "The most prominent change this time is the kmem_buckets based
  hardening of kmalloc() allocations from Kees Cook.

  We have also extended the kmalloc() alignment guarantees for
  non-power-of-two sizes in a way that benefits rust.

  The rest are various cleanups and non-critical fixups.

   - Dedicated bucket allocator (Kees Cook)

     This series [1] enhances the probabilistic defense against heap
     spraying/grooming of CONFIG_RANDOM_KMALLOC_CACHES from last year.

     kmalloc() users that are known to be useful for exploits can get
     completely separate set of kmalloc caches that can't be shared with
     other users. The first converted users are alloc_msg() and
     memdup_user().

     The hardening is enabled by CONFIG_SLAB_BUCKETS.

   - Extended kmalloc() alignment guarantees (Vlastimil Babka)

     For years now we have guaranteed natural alignment for power-of-two
     allocations, but nothing was defined for other sizes (in practice,
     we have two such buckets, kmalloc-96 and kmalloc-192).

     To avoid unnecessary padding in the rust layer due to its alignment
     rules, extend the guarantee so that the alignment is at least the
     largest power-of-two divisor of the requested size.

     This fits what rust needs, is a superset of the existing
     power-of-two guarantee, and does not in practice change the layout
     (and thus does not add overhead due to padding) of the kmalloc-96
     and kmalloc-192 caches, unless slab debugging is enabled for them.

   - Cleanups and non-critical fixups (Chengming Zhou, Suren
     Baghdasaryan, Matthew Willcox, Alex Shi, and Vlastimil Babka)

     Various tweaks related to the new alloc profiling code, folio
     conversion, debugging and more leftovers after SLAB"

d73778e4b8 mm/util: Use dedicated slab buckets for memdup_user()
Both memdup_user() and vmemdup_user() handle allocations that are
regularly used for exploiting use-after-free type confusion flaws in
the kernel (e.g. prctl() PR_SET_VMA_ANON_NAME[1] and setxattr[2][3][4]
respectively).

Since both are designed for contents coming from userspace, it allows
for userspace-controlled allocation sizes. Use a dedicated set of kmalloc
buckets so these allocations do not share caches with the global kmalloc
buckets.

After a fresh boot under Ubuntu 23.10, we can see the caches are already
in active use:

51104c19d8 kunit: test: Add vm_mmap() allocation resource manager
For tests that need to allocate using vm_mmap() (e.g. usercopy and
execve), provide the interface to have the allocation tracked by KUnit
itself. This requires bringing up a placeholder userspace mm.

This combines my earlier attempt at this with Mark Rutland's version[1].

Normally alloc_mm() and arch_pick_mmap_layout() aren't exported for
modules, so export these only for KUnit testing.

0ee1472547 mm/util: Swap kmemdup_array() arguments
GCC 14.1 complains about the argument usage of kmemdup_array():

  drivers/soc/tegra/fuse/fuse-tegra.c:130:65: error: 'kmemdup_array' sizes specified with 'sizeof' in the earlier argument and not in the later argument [-Werror=calloc-transposed-args]
    130 |         fuse->lookups = kmemdup_array(fuse->soc->lookups, sizeof(*fuse->lookups),
        |                                                                 ^
  drivers/soc/tegra/fuse/fuse-tegra.c:130:65: note: earlier argument should specify number of elements, later size of each element

The annotation introduced by commit 7d78a77733 ("string: Add
additional __realloc_size() annotations for "dup" helpers") lets the
compiler think that kmemdup_array() follows the same format as calloc(),
with the number of elements preceding the size of one element. So we
could simply swap the arguments to __realloc_size() to get rid of that
warning, but it seems cleaner to instead have kmemdup_array() follow the
same format as krealloc_array(), memdup_array_user(), calloc() etc.

9415983599 mm: fix xyz_noprof functions calling profiled functions
Grepping /proc/allocinfo for "noprof" reveals several xyz_noprof
functions, which means internally they are calling profiled functions.
This should never happen as such calls move allocation charge from a
higher level location where it should be accounted for into these lower
level helpers. Fix this by replacing profiled function calls with noprof
ones.

529ce23a76 mm: switch mm->get_unmapped_area() to a flag
The mm_struct contains a function pointer *get_unmapped_area(), which is
set to either arch_get_unmapped_area() or arch_get_unmapped_area_topdown()
during the initialization of the mm.

Since the function pointer only ever points to two functions that are
named the same across all arch's, a function pointer is not really
required. In addition future changes will want to add versions of the
functions that take additional arguments. So to save a pointers worth of
bytes in mm_struct, and prevent adding additional function pointers to
mm_struct in future changes, remove it and keep the information about
which get_unmapped_area() to use in a flag.

Add the new flag to MMF_INIT_MASK so it doesn't get clobbered on fork by
mmf_init_flags(). Most MM flags get clobbered on fork. In the
pre-existing behavior mm->get_unmapped_area() would get copied to the new
mm in dup_mm(), so not clobbering the flag preserves the existing behavior
around inheriting the topdown-ness.

Introduce a helper, mm_get_unmapped_area(), to easily convert code that
refers to the old function pointer to instead select and call either
arch_get_unmapped_area() or arch_get_unmapped_area_topdown() based on the
flag. Then drop the mm->get_unmapped_area() function pointer. Leave the
get_unmapped_area() pointer in struct file_operations alone. The main
purpose of this change is to reorganize in preparation for future changes,
but it also converts the calls of mm->get_unmapped_area() from indirect
branches into a direct ones.

The stress-ng bigheap benchmark calls realloc a lot, which calls through
get_unmapped_area() in the kernel. On x86, the change yielded a ~1%
improvement there on a retpoline config.

In testing a few x86 configs, removing the pointer unfortunately didn't
result in any actual size reductions in the compiled layout of mm_struct.
But depending on compiler or arch alignment requirements, the change could
shrink the size of mm_struct.

 - Ryan Roberts has added fork()-time PTE batching of THP ptes in the
   series "mm/memory: optimize fork() with PTE-mapped THP". Mainly
   targeted at arm64, this significantly speeds up fork() when the process
   has a large number of pte-mapped folios.

 - David Hildenbrand also gets in on the THP pte batching game in his

   The microbenchmark improvements are nice.

 - And in the series "Transparent Contiguous PTEs for User Mappings" Ryan
   Roberts further utilizes arm's pte's contiguous bit ("contpte

 - In the series "selftests/mm: Output cleanups for the compaction test",
   Mark Brown did what the title claims.

 - Kinsey Ho has added the series "mm/mglru: code cleanup and refactoring".

 - Even more zswap material from Nhat Pham. The series "fix and extend
   zswap kselftests" does as claimed.

 - In the series "Introduce cpu_dcache_is_aliasing() to fix DAX
   regression" Mathieu Desnoyers has cleaned up and fixed rather a mess in
   our handling of DAX on archiecctures which have virtually aliasing data
   caches. The arm architecture is the main beneficiary.

 - Lokesh Gidra's series "per-vma locks in userfaultfd" provides dramatic

Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton:

 - Sumanth Korikkar has taught s390 to allocate hotplug-time page frames
   from hotplugged memory rather than only from main memory. Series
   "implement "memmap on memory" feature on s390".

 - More folio conversions from Matthew Wilcox in the series

	"Convert memcontrol charge moving to use folios"
	"mm: convert mm counter to take a folio"

 - Chengming Zhou has optimized zswap's rbtree locking, providing
   significant reductions in system time and modest but measurable
   reductions in overall runtimes. The series is "mm/zswap: optimize the
   scalability of zswap rb-tree".

 - Chengming Zhou has also provided the series "mm/zswap: optimize zswap
   lru list" which provides measurable runtime benefits in some
   swap-intensive situations.

 - And Chengming Zhou further optimizes zswap in the series "mm/zswap:
   optimize for dynamic zswap_pools". Measured improvements are modest.

 - zswap cleanups and simplifications from Yosry Ahmed in the series
   "mm: zswap: simplify zswap_swapoff()".

 - In the series "Add DAX ABI for memmap_on_memory", Vishal Verma has
   contributed several DAX cleanups as well as adding a sysfs tunable to
   control the memmap_on_memory setting when the dax device is
   hotplugged as system memory.

 - Johannes Weiner has added the large series "mm: zswap: cleanups",
   which does that.

 - More DAMON work from SeongJae Park in the series

	"mm/damon: make DAMON debugfs interface deprecation unignorable"
	"selftests/damon: add more tests for core functionalities and corner cases"
	"Docs/mm/damon: misc readability improvements"
	"mm/damon: let DAMOS feeds and tame/auto-tune itself"

 - In the series "mm/mempolicy: weighted interleave mempolicy and sysfs
   extension" Rakie Kim has developed a new mempolicy interleaving
   policy wherein we allocate memory across nodes in a weighted fashion
   rather than uniformly. This is beneficial in heterogeneous memory
   environments appearing with CXL.

 - Christophe Leroy has contributed some cleanup and consolidation work
   against the ARM pagetable dumping code in the series "mm: ptdump:
   Refactor CONFIG_DEBUG_WX and check_wx_pages debugfs attribute".

 - Luis Chamberlain has added some additional xarray selftesting in the
   series "test_xarray: advanced API multi-index tests".

 - Muhammad Usama Anjum has reworked the selftest code to make its
   human-readable output conform to the TAP ("Test Anything Protocol")
   format. Amongst other things, this opens up the use of third-party
   tools to parse and process out selftesting results.

 - Ryan Roberts has added fork()-time PTE batching of THP ptes in the
   series "mm/memory: optimize fork() with PTE-mapped THP". Mainly
   targeted at arm64, this significantly speeds up fork() when the
   process has a large number of pte-mapped folios.

 - David Hildenbrand also gets in on the THP pte batching game in his
   series "mm/memory: optimize unmap/zap with PTE-mapped THP". It
   implements batching during munmap() and other pte teardown
   situations. The microbenchmark improvements are nice.

 - And in the series "Transparent Contiguous PTEs for User Mappings"
   Ryan Roberts further utilizes arm's pte's contiguous bit ("contpte
   mappings"). Kernel build times on arm64 improved nicely. Ryan's
   series "Address some contpte nits" provides some followup work.

 - In the series "mm/hugetlb: Restore the reservation" Breno Leitao has
   fixed an obscure hugetlb race which was causing unnecessary page
   faults. He has also added a reproducer under the selftest code.

 - In the series "selftests/mm: Output cleanups for the compaction
   test", Mark Brown did what the title claims.

 - Kinsey Ho has added the series "mm/mglru: code cleanup and
   refactoring".

 - Even more zswap material from Nhat Pham. The series "fix and extend
   zswap kselftests" does as claimed.

 - In the series "Introduce cpu_dcache_is_aliasing() to fix DAX
   regression" Mathieu Desnoyers has cleaned up and fixed rather a mess
   in our handling of DAX on archiecctures which have virtually aliasing
   data caches. The arm architecture is the main beneficiary.

 - Lokesh Gidra's series "per-vma locks in userfaultfd" provides
   dramatic improvements in worst-case mmap_lock hold times during
   certain userfaultfd operations.

 - Some page_owner enhancements and maintenance work from Oscar Salvador
   in his series

	"page_owner: print stacks and their outstanding allocations"
	"page_owner: Fixup and cleanup"

 - Uladzislau Rezki has contributed some vmalloc scalability
   improvements in his series "Mitigate a vmap lock contention". It
   realizes a 12x improvement for a certain microbenchmark.

 - Some kexec/crash cleanup work from Baoquan He in the series "Split
   crash out from kexec and clean up related config items".

 - Some zsmalloc maintenance work from Chengming Zhou in the series

	"mm/zsmalloc: fix and optimize objects/page migration"
	"mm/zsmalloc: some cleanup for get/set_zspage_mapping()"

 - Zi Yan has taught the MM to perform compaction on folios larger than

f5eec03611 mm/util.c: add byte count to __vm_enough_memory failure warning
Commit 44b414c871 ("mm/util.c: add warning if
__vm_enough_memory fails") adds debug information which gives the process
id and executable name should __vm_enough_memory() fail. Adding the
number of pages to the failure message would benefit application
developers and system administrators in debugging overambitious memory
requests by providing a point of reference to the amount of memory causing
__vm_enough_memory() to fail.

1. Set appropriate kernel tunable to reach code path for failure
   message:

	# echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_memory

2. Test program to generate failure - requests 1 gibibyte per
   iteration:

	#include <stdlib.h>
	#include <stdio.h>

	int main(int argc, char **argv) {
		for(;;) {
			if(malloc(1<<30) == NULL)
				break;

			printf("allocated 1 GiB\n");
		}

		return 0;
	}

3. Output:

	Before:

	__vm_enough_memory: pid: 1218, comm: a.out, not enough memory
for the allocation

	After:

	__vm_enough_memory: pid: 1137, comm: a.out, bytes: 1073741824,
not enough memory for the allocation

2f7537620f mm/util: use kmap_local_page() in memcmp_pages()
kmap_atomic() has been deprecated in favor of kmap_local_page().

Therefore, replace kmap_atomic() with kmap_local_page() in memcmp_pages().

kmap_atomic() is implemented like a kmap_local_page() which also disables
page-faults and preemption (the latter only in !PREEMPT_RT kernels). The
kernel virtual addresses returned by these two API are only valid in the
context of the callers (i.e., they cannot be handed to other threads).

With kmap_local_page() the mappings are per thread and CPU local like in
kmap_atomic(); however, they can handle page-faults and can be called from
any context (including interrupts). The tasks that call kmap_local_page()
can be preempted and, when they are scheduled to run again, the kernel
virtual addresses are restored and are still valid.

In memcmp_pages(), the block of code between the mapping and un-mapping
does not depend on the above-mentioned side effects of kmap_aatomic(), so
that mere replacements of the old API with the new one is all that is
required (i.e., there is no need to explicitly call pagefault_disable()
and/or preempt_disable()).

5f74f820f6 parisc: fix mmap_base calculation when stack grows upwards
Matoro reported various userspace crashes on the parisc platform with kernel
6.6 and bisected it to commit 3033cd4307 ("parisc: Use generic mmap top-down
layout and brk randomization").

That commit switched parisc to use the common infrastructure to calculate
mmap_base, but missed that the mmap_base() function takes care for
architectures where the stack grows downwards only.

Fix the mmap_base() calculation to include the stack-grows-upwards case
and thus fix the userspace crashes on parisc.

4093602d6b nilfs2: convert nilfs_copy_page() to nilfs_copy_folio()
Both callers already have a folio, so pass it in and use it directly.

6e284c55fc mm: Remove kmem_valid_obj()
Function kmem_dump_obj() will splat if passed a pointer to a non-slab
object. So nothing calls it directly, instead calling kmem_valid_obj()
first to determine whether the passed pointer to a valid slab object. This
means that merging kmem_valid_obj() into kmem_dump_obj() will make the
code more concise. Therefore, convert kmem_dump_obj() to work the same
way as vmalloc_dump_obj(), removing the need for the kmem_dump_obj()
caller to check kmem_valid_obj(). After this, there are no remaining
calls to kmem_valid_obj() anymore, and it can be safely removed.

c83ad36a18 rcu: dump vmalloc memory info safely
Currently, for double invoke call_rcu(), will dump rcu_head objects memory
info, if the objects is not allocated from the slab allocator, the
vmalloc_dump_obj() will be invoke and the vmap_area_lock spinlock need to

The previous patch fixes this by using the deadlock-safe best-effort

the pointer was a vmalloc pointer so that we print at least something.

Pull x86 shadow stack support from Dave Hansen:
 "This is the long awaited x86 shadow stack support, part of Intel's
  Control-flow Enforcement Technology (CET).

  CET consists of two related security features: shadow stacks and
  indirect branch tracking. This series implements just the shadow stack
  part of this feature, and just for userspace.

  The main use case for shadow stack is providing protection against
  return oriented programming attacks. It works by maintaining a
  secondary (shadow) stack using a special memory type that has
  protections against modification. When executing a CALL instruction,
  the processor pushes the return address to both the normal stack and
  to the special permission shadow stack. Upon RET, the processor pops
  the shadow stack copy and compares it to the normal stack copy.

  versions of this patch set"

3033cd4307 parisc: Use generic mmap top-down layout and brk randomization
parisc uses a top-down layout by default that exactly fits the generic
functions, so get rid of arch specific code and use the generic version
by selecting ARCH_WANT_DEFAULT_TOPDOWN_MMAP_LAYOUT.

Note that on parisc the stack always grows up and a "unlimited stack"
simply means that the value as defined in CONFIG_STACK_MAX_DEFAULT_SIZE_MB
should be used. So RLIM_INFINITY is not an indicator to use the legacy
memory layout.

cb67f4282b mm,thp,rmap: simplify compound page mapcount handling
Compound page (folio) mapcount calculations have been different for anon
and file (or shmem) THPs, and involved the obscure PageDoubleMap flag.
And each huge mapping and unmapping of a file (or shmem) THP involved
atomically incrementing and decrementing the mapcount of every subpage of
that huge page, dirtying many struct page cachelines.

Add subpages_mapcount field to the struct folio and first tail page, so
that the total of subpage mapcounts is available in one place near the
head: then page_mapcount() and total_mapcount() and page_mapped(), and
their folio equivalents, are so quick that anon and file and hugetlb don't
need to be optimized differently. Delete the unloved PageDoubleMap.

page_add and page_remove rmap functions must now maintain the
subpages_mapcount as well as the subpage _mapcount, when dealing with pte
mappings of huge pages; and correct maintenance of NR_ANON_MAPPED and
NR_FILE_MAPPED statistics still needs reading through the subpages, using
nr_subpages_unmapped() - but only when first or last pmd mapping finds
subpages_mapcount raised (double-map case, not the common case).

But are those counts (used to decide when to split an anon THP, and in
vmscan's pagecache_reclaimable heuristic) correctly maintained? Not
quite: since page_remove_rmap() (and also split_huge_pmd()) is often
called without page lock, there can be races when a subpage pte mapcount
0<->1 while compound pmd mapcount 0<->1 is scanning - races which the
previous implementation had prevented. The statistics might become
inaccurate, and even drift down until they underflow through 0. That is
not good enough, but is better dealt with in a followup patch.

Update a few comments on first and second tail page overlaid fields.
hugepage_add_new_anon_rmap() has to "increment" compound_mapcount, but
subpages_mapcount and compound_pincount are already correctly at 0, so
delete its reinitialization of compound_pincount.

A simple 100 X munmap(mmap(2GB, MAP_SHARED|MAP_POPULATE, tmpfs), 2GB) took
18 seconds on small pages, and used to take 1 second on huge pages, but
now takes 119 milliseconds on huge pages. Mapping by pmds a second time
used to take 860ms and now takes 92ms; mapping by pmds after mapping by
ptes (when the scan is needed) used to take 870ms and now takes 495ms.
But there might be some benchmarks which would show a slowdown, because
tail struct pages now fall out of cache until final freeing checks them.

bucket_table_alloc uses kvzalloc(GPF_ATOMIC). If kmalloc fails, this now

Use the new free_pgtables() and unmap_vmas() in do_mas_align_munmap(). At

44b414c871 mm/util.c: add warning if __vm_enough_memory fails
If a process has not enough memory to allocate a new virtual mapping, we
may meet verious kinds of error, eg, fork cannot allocate memory, SIGBUS

2fd86a07c9 mm/util: reduce stack usage of folio_mapcount
folio_test_hugetlb() will call PageHeadHuge which is a function call,
and blocks the compiler from recognizing this redundant load.

After rearranging the code, stack usage is dropped from 32 to 24, and
the function size is smaller (tested on GCC 12):

Before:
Stack usage:
mm/util.c:845:5:folio_mapcount  32      static
Size:
0000000000000ea0 00000000000000c7 T folio_mapcount

After:
Stack usage:
mm/util.c:845:5:folio_mapcount  24      static
Size:
0000000000000ea0 00000000000000b0 T folio_mapcount

5ad7dd882e random: move randomize_page() into mm where it belongs
randomize_page is an mm function. It is documented like one. It contains
the history of one. It has the naming convention of one. It looks
just like another very similar function in mm, randomize_stack_top().
And it has always been maintained and updated by mm people. There is no
need for it to be in random.c. In the "which shape does not look like
the other ones" test, pointing to randomize_page() is correct.

So move randomize_page() into mm/util.c, right next to the similar
randomize_stack_top() function.

This commit contains no actual code changes.

014bb1de4f mm: create new mm/swap.h header file
Patch series "MM changes to improve swap-over-NFS support".

Assorted improvements for swap-via-filesystem.

This is a resend of these patches, rebased on current HEAD. The only
substantial changes is that swap_dirty_folio has replaced
swap_set_page_dirty.

Currently swap-via-fs (SWP_FS_OPS) doesn't work for any filesystem. It
has previously worked for NFS but that broke a few releases back. This
series changes to use a new ->swap_rw rather than ->readpage and
->direct_IO. It also makes other improvements.

There is a companion series already in linux-next which fixes various
issues with NFS. Once both series land, a final patch is needed which
changes NFS over to use ->swap_rw.

This patch (of 10):

Many functions declared in include/linux/swap.h are only used within mm/

Create a new "mm/swap.h" and move some of these declarations there.
Remove the redundant 'extern' from the function declarations.

[akpm@linux-foundation.org: mm/memory-failure.c needs mm/swap.h]

723820f3f7 mm: Allow arch specific arch_randomize_brk() with CONFIG_ARCH_WANT_DEFAULT_TOPDOWN_MMAP_LAYOUT
Commit e7142bf5d2 ("arm64, mm: make randomization selected by
generic topdown mmap layout") introduced a default version of
arch_randomize_brk() provided when
CONFIG_ARCH_WANT_DEFAULT_TOPDOWN_MMAP_LAYOUT is selected.

powerpc could select CONFIG_ARCH_WANT_DEFAULT_TOPDOWN_MMAP_LAYOUT
but needs to provide its own arch_randomize_brk().

In order to allow that, define generic version of arch_randomize_brk()
as a __weak symbol.

9becb68891 kvmalloc: use vmalloc_huge for vmalloc allocations
Since commit 559089e0a9 ("vmalloc: replace VM_NO_HUGE_VMAP with
VM_ALLOW_HUGE_VMAP"), the use of hugepage mappings for vmalloc is an
opt-in strategy, because it caused a number of problems that weren't
noticed until x86 enabled it too.

One of the issues was fixed by Nick Piggin in commit 3b8000ae18
("mm/vmalloc: huge vmalloc backing pages should be split rather than
compound"), but I'm still worried about page protection issues, and
VM_FLUSH_RESET_PERMS in particular.

However, like the hash table allocation case (commit f2edd118d0:
"page_alloc: use vmalloc_huge for large system hash"), the use of
kvmalloc() should be safe from any such games, since the returned
pointer might be a SLUB allocation, and as such no user should
reasonably be using it in any odd ways.

We also know that the allocations are fairly large, since it falls back
to the vmalloc case only when a kmalloc() fails. So using a hugepage
mapping seems both safe and relevant.

This patch does show a weakness in the opt-in strategy: since the opt-in
flag is in the 'vm_flags', not the usual gfp_t allocation flags, very
few of the usual interfaces actually expose it.

That's not much of an issue in this case that already used one of the
fairly specialized low-level vmalloc interfaces for the allocation, but
for a lot of other vmalloc() users that might want to opt in, it's going
to be very inconvenient.

We'll either have to fix any compatibility problems, or expose it in the
gfp flags (__GFP_COMP would have made a lot of sense) to allow normal
vmalloc() users to use hugepage mappings. That said, the cases that
really matter were probably already taken care of by the hash tabel
allocation.
