According to Andi, it isn't clear whether lpage allocator is worth the
trouble as there are many processors where PMD TLB is far scarcer than
PTE TLB. The advantage or disadvantage probably depends on the actual
size of percpu area and specific processor. As performance
degradation due to TLB pressure tends to be highly workload specific
and subtle, it is difficult to decide which way to go without more
data.
This patch implements percpu_alloc kernel parameter to allow selecting
which first chunk allocator to use to ease debugging and testing.
While at it, make sure all the failure paths report why something
failed to help determining why certain allocator isn't working. Also,
kill the "Great future plan" comment which had already been realized
quite some time ago.

Enable the use of GCC's coverage testing tool gcov [1] with the Linux
kernel. gcov may be useful for:
* debugging (has this code been reached at all?)
* test improvement (how do I change my test to cover these lines?)
* minimizing kernel configurations (do I need this option if the
associated code is never run?)
The profiling patch incorporates the following changes:
* change kbuild to include profiling flags
* provide functions needed by profiling code
* present profiling data as files in debugfs
Note that on some architectures, enabling gcc's profiling option
"-fprofile-arcs" for the entire kernel may trigger compile/link/
run-time problems, some of which are caused by toolchain bugs and
others which require adjustment of architecture code.
For this reason profiling the entire kernel is initially restricted
to those architectures for which it is known to work without changes.
This restriction can be lifted once an architecture has been tested
and found compatible with gcc's profiling. Profiling of single files
or directories is still available on all platforms (see config help
text).

The console blank timer is currently hardcoded to 10*60 seconds which
might be annoying on systems with no input devices attached to wake up the
console again. Especially during development, disabling the screen saver
can be handy - for example when debugging the root fs mount mechanism or
other scenarios where no userspace program could be started to do that at
runtime from userspace.
This patch defines a core_param for the variable in charge which allows
users to entirely disable the blank feature at boot time by setting it 0.
The value can still be overwritten at runtime using the standard ioctl
call - this just allows to conditionally change the default.

Adds support for PCI Express transaction layer end-to-end CRC checking
(ECRC). This patch will enable/disable ECRC checking by setting/clearing
the ECRC Check Enable and/or ECRC Generation Enable bits for devices that
support ECRC.
The ECRC setting is controlled by the "pci=ecrc=<policy>" command-line
option. If this option is not set or is set to 'bios", the enable and
generation bits are left in whatever state that firmware/BIOS set them to.
The "off" setting turns them off, and the "on" option turns them on (if the
device supports it).
Turning ECRC on or off can be a data integrity versus performance
tradeoff. In theory, turning it on will catch more data errors, turning
it off means possibly better performance since CRC does not need to be
calculated by the PCIe hardware and packet sizes are reduced.

From the perspective of most users of recent systems, disabling Host
Protected Area (HPA) can break vendor RAID formats, GPT partitions and
risks corrupting firmware or overwriting vendor system recovery tools.
Unfortunately the original (kernels < 2.6.30) behavior (unconditionally
disabling HPA and using full disk capacity) was introduced at the time
when the main use of HPA was to make the drive look small enough for the
BIOS to allow the system to boot with large capacity drives.
Thus to allow the maximum compatibility with the existing setups (using
HPA and partitioned with HPA disabled) we automically disable HPA if
any partitions overlapping HPA are detected. Additionally HPA can also
be disabled using the "nohpa" module parameter (i.e. "ide_core.nohpa=0.0"
to disable HPA on /dev/hda).

When using ftrace=function on the command line to trace functions
on boot up, one can not filter out functions that are commonly called.
This patch adds two new ftrace command line commands.
ftrace_notrace=function-list
ftrace_filter=function-list
Where function-list is a comma separated list of functions to filter.
The ftrace_notrace will make the functions listed not be included
in the function tracing, and ftrace_filter will only trace the functions
listed.
These two act the same as the debugfs/tracing/set_ftrace_notrace and
debugfs/tracing/set_ftrace_filter respectively.
The simple glob expressions that are allowed by the filter files can also
be used by the command line interface.
ftrace_notrace=rcu*,*lock,*spin*
Will not trace any function that starts with rcu, ends with lock, or has
the word spin in it.
Note, if the self tests are enabled, they may interfere with the filtering
set by the command lines.

The IMA TCB policy is dangerous. A normal use can use all of a system's
memory (which cannot be freed) simply by building and running lots of
executables. The TCB policy is also nearly useless because logging in as root
often causes a policy violation when dealing with utmp, thus rendering the
measurements meaningless.
There is no good fix for this in the kernel. A full TCB policy would need to
be loaded in userspace using LSM rule matching to get both a protected and
useful system. But, if too little is measured before userspace can load a real
policy one again ends up with a meaningless set of measurements. One option
would be to put the policy load inside the initrd in order to get it early
enough in the boot sequence to be useful, but this runs into trouble with the
LSM. For IMA to measure the LSM policy and the LSM policy loading mechanism
it needs rules to do so, but we already talked about problems with defaulting
to such broad rules....
IMA also depends on the files being measured to be on an FS which implements
and supports i_version. Since the only FS with this support (ext4) doesn't
even use it by default it seems silly to have any IMA rules by default.
This should reduce the performance overhead of IMA to near 0 while still
letting users who choose to configure their machine as such to inclue the
ima_tcb kernel paramenter and get measurements during boot before they can
load a customized, reasonable policy in userspace.

Adds support for the "unused" page hint which can be used in shared
memory partitions to flag pages not in use, which will then be stolen
before active pages by the hypervisor when memory needs to be moved to
LPARs in need of additional memory. Failure to mark pages as 'unused'
makes the LPAR slower to give up unused memory to other partitions.
This adds the kernel parameter 'cmo_free_hint' to disable this
functionality.

This re-adds the force_arch_perfmon option that was in the original
arch perfmon patchkit. Originally this was rejected in favour
of a generalized perfmon=name option, but it turned out implementing
the later in a reliable way is hard (and it would have been easy
to crash the kernel if a user gets it wrong)
But now Atom and Core i7 support being readded a user would
need to update their oprofile userland to beyond 0.9.4 to use oprofile again
on Atom or Core i7.

The patch adds kernel parameter intel_iommu=pt to set up pass through
mode in context mapping entry. This disables DMAR in linux kernel; but
KVM still runs on VT-d and interrupt remapping still works.
In this mode, kernel uses swiotlb for DMA API functions but other VT-d
functionalities are enabled for KVM. KVM always uses multi level
translation page table in VT-d. By default, pass though mode is disabled
in kernel.
This is useful when people don't want to enable VT-d DMAR in kernel but
still want to use KVM and interrupt remapping for reasons like DMAR
performance concern or debug purpose.

This patch combines Greg Bank's dprintk() work with the existing dynamic
printk patchset, we are now calling it 'dynamic debug'.
The new feature of this patchset is a richer /debugfs control file interface,
(an example output from my system is at the bottom), which allows fined grained
control over the the debug output. The output can be controlled by function,
file, module, format string, and line number.
for example, enabled all debug messages in module 'nf_conntrack':
echo -n 'module nf_conntrack +p' > /mnt/debugfs/dynamic_debug/control
to disable them:
echo -n 'module nf_conntrack -p' > /mnt/debugfs/dynamic_debug/control

The default bus speed is typically set to speed of slowest I2C chip on the
bus and overriding allow to use some experimental configurations or updated

This patch allows memory resources to be assigned with a specified
alignment at boot-time or run-time. The patch is useful when we use PCI
pass-through, because page-aligned memory resources are required to
securely share PCI resources with guest drivers.
If you want to assign the resource at boot time, please set
"pci=resource_alignment=" boot parameter.
This is format of "pci=resource_alignment=" boot parameter:
[<order of align>@][<domain>:]<bus>:<slot>.<func>[; ...]
Specifies alignment and device to reassign
aligned memory resources.
If <order of align> is not specified, PAGE_SIZE is
used as alignment.
PCI-PCI bridge can be specified, if resource
windows need to be expanded.
This is example:
pci=resource_alignment=20@07:00.0;18@0f:00.0;00:1d.7
If you want to assign the resource at run-time, please set
"/sys/bus/pci/resource_alignment" file, and hot-remove the device and
hot-add the device. For this purpose, fakephp or PCI hotplug interfaces
can be used.
The format of "/sys/bus/pci/resource_alignment" file is the same with
boot parameter. You can use "," instead of ";".
For example:
# cd /sys/bus/pci
# echo -n 20@12:00.0 > resource_alignment
# echo 1 > devices/0000:12:00.0/remove
# echo 1 > rescan

IMA provides hardware (TPM) based measurement and attestation for
file measurements. As the Trusted Computing (TPM) model requires,
IMA measures all files before they are accessed in any way (on the
integrity_bprm_check, integrity_path_check and integrity_file_mmap
hooks), and commits the measurements to the TPM. Once added to the
TPM, measurements can not be removed.
In addition, IMA maintains a list of these file measurements, which
can be used to validate the aggregate value stored in the TPM. The
TPM can sign these measurements, and thus the system can prove, to
itself and to a third party, the system's integrity in a way that
cannot be circumvented by malicious or compromised software.

Device drivers that use pci_request_regions() (and similar APIs) have a
reasonable expectation that they are the only ones accessing their device.
As part of the e1000e hunt, we were afraid that some userland (X or some
bootsplash stuff) was mapping the MMIO region that the driver thought it
had exclusively via /dev/mem or via various sysfs resource mappings.
This patch adds the option for device drivers to cause their reserved
regions to the "banned from /dev/mem use" list, so now both kernel memory
and device-exclusive MMIO regions are banned.
NOTE: This is only active when CONFIG_STRICT_DEVMEM is set.

provided for the cases where developers want to diagnose, in the field,
drivers issues from userspace.

to the userspace application in order to analyse allocation hotspots,
internal fragmentation and so on, making it possible to see how well an
allocator performs, as well as debug and profile kernel code.

acpi_early_init() was changed to over-write the cmdline param,
making it really inconvenient to set debug flags at boot-time.
Also,
This sets the default level to "info", which is what all the ACPI
drivers use. So to enable messages from drivers, you only have to
supply the "layer" (a.k.a. "component"). For non-"info" ACPI core

Impact: enhancement to stack tracer
The stack tracer currently is either on when configured in or
off when it is not. It can not be disabled when it is configured on.
(besides disabling the function tracer that it uses)
This patch adds a way to enable or disable the stack tracer at
run time. It defaults off on bootup, but a kernel parameter 'stacktrace'
has been added to enable it on bootup.
A new sysctl has been added "kernel.stack_tracer_enabled" to let
the user enable or disable the stack tracer at run time.

Add a no_file_caps boot option when file capabilities are
compiled into the kernel (CONFIG_SECURITY_FILE_CAPABILITIES=y).
This allows distributions to ship a kernel with file capabilities
compiled in, without forcing users to use (and understand and
trust) them.
When no_file_caps is specified at boot, then when a process executes
a file, any file capabilities stored with that file will not be
used in the calculation of the process' new capability sets.
This means that booting with the no_file_caps boot option will
not be the same as booting a kernel with file capabilities
compiled out - in particular a task with CAP_SETPCAP will not
have any chance of passing capabilities to another task (which
isn't "really" possible anyway, and which may soon by killed
altogether by David Howells in any case), and it will instead
be able to put new capabilities in its pI. However since fI
will always be empty and pI is masked with fI, it gains the
task nothing.
We also support the extra prctl options, setting securebits and
dropping capabilities from the per-process bounding set.
The other remaining difference is that killpriv, task_setscheduler,
setioprio, and setnice will continue to be hooked. That will
be noticable in the case where a root task changed its uid
while keeping some caps, and another task owned by the new uid
tries to change settings for the more privileged task.

Impact: Changes timekeeping on Vmware (or with tsc=reliable).
This is achieved by resetting the CLOCKSOURCE_MUST_VERIFY flag.
We add a tsc=reliable commandline option to enable this.
This enables legacy hardware without HPET, LAPIC, or ACPI timers
to enter high-resolution timer mode.
Along with that have extended this to be used in virtualization environement
too. Now we also set this flag if the X86_FEATURE_TSC_RELIABLE bit is set.
This is important since there is a wrap-around problem with the acpi_pm timer.
The acpi_pm counter is just 24bits and this can overflow in ~4 seconds. With
the NO_HZ kernels in virtualized environment, there can be situations when
the guest is descheduled for longer duration, as a result we may miss the wrap
of the acpi counter. When TSC is used as a clocksource and acpi_pm timer is
being used as the watchdog clocksource this error in acpi_pm results in TSC
being marked as unstable, and essentially results in time dropping in chunks
of 4 seconds whenever this wrap is missed. Since the virtualized TSC is
reliable on VMware, we should always use the TSCs clocksource on VMware, so
we skip the verfication at runtime, by checking for the feature bit.
Since we reset the flag for mgeode systems too, i have combined
the mgeode case with the feature bit check.

Maybe the incorrect power state is returned on the bogus bios, which
is different with the real power state. For example: the bios returns D0
state and the real power state is D3. OS expects to set the device to D0
state. In such case if OS uses the power state returned by the BIOS and
checks the device power state very strictly in power transition, the device
can't be transited to the correct power state.
So the boot option of "acpi.power_nocheck=1" is added to avoid checking
the device power in the course of device power transition.

Base infrastructure to enable per-module debug messages.
I've introduced CONFIG_DYNAMIC_PRINTK_DEBUG, which when enabled centralizes
control of debugging statements on a per-module basis in one /proc file,
currently, <debugfs>/dynamic_printk/modules. When, CONFIG_DYNAMIC_PRINTK_DEBUG,
is not set, debugging statements can still be enabled as before, often by
defining 'DEBUG' for the proper compilation unit. Thus, this patch set has no
affect when CONFIG_DYNAMIC_PRINTK_DEBUG is not set.
The infrastructure currently ties into all pr_debug() and dev_dbg() calls. That
is, if CONFIG_DYNAMIC_PRINTK_DEBUG is set, all pr_debug() and dev_dbg() calls
can be dynamically enabled/disabled on a per-module basis.
Future plans include extending this functionality to subsystems, that define
their own debug levels and flags.
Usage:
Dynamic debugging is controlled by the debugfs file,
<debugfs>/dynamic_printk/modules. This file contains a list of the modules that
can be enabled. The format of the file is as follows:
<module_name> <enabled=0/1>
.
.
.
<module_name> : Name of the module in which the debug call resides
<enabled=0/1> : whether the messages are enabled or not
For example:
snd_hda_intel enabled=0
fixup enabled=1
driver enabled=0
Enable a module:
$echo "set enabled=1 <module_name>" > dynamic_printk/modules
Disable a module:
$echo "set enabled=0 <module_name>" > dynamic_printk/modules
Enable all modules:
$echo "set enabled=1 all" > dynamic_printk/modules
Disable all modules:
$echo "set enabled=0 all" > dynamic_printk/modules
Finally, passing "dynamic_printk" at the command line enables
debugging for all modules. This mode can be turned off via the above
disable command.

Some BIOSes have been observed to corrupt memory in the low 64k. This
change:
- Reserves all memory which does not have to be in that area, to
prevent it from being used as general memory by the kernel. Things
like the SMP trampoline are still in the memory, however.
- Clears the reserved memory so we can observe changes to it.
- Adds a function check_for_bios_corruption() which checks and reports on
memory becoming unexpectedly non-zero. Currently it's called in the
x86 fault handler, and the powermanagement debug output.

ACPI defines a hardware signature. BIOS calculates the signature according to
hardware configure and if hardware changes while hibernated, the signature
will change. In that case, S4 resume should fail.
Still, there may be systems on which this mechanism does not work correctly,
so it is better to provide a workaround for them. For this reason, add a new
switch to the acpi_sleep= command line argument allowing one to disable
hardware signature checking.

Boot-time test for system suspend states (STR or standby). The generic
RTC framework triggers wakeup alarms, which are used to exit those states.
- Measures some aspects of suspend time ... this uses "jiffies" until
someone converts it to use a timebase that works properly even while
timer IRQs are disabled.
- Triggered by a command line parameter. By default nothing even
vaguely troublesome will happen, but "test_suspend=mem" will give
you a brief STR test during system boot. (Or you may need to use
"test_suspend=standby" instead, if your hardware needs that.)
This isn't without problems. It fires early enough during boot that for
example both PCMCIA and MMC stacks have misbehaved. The workaround in
those cases was to boot without such media cards inserted.

Instead of using the variable mmu_huge_psize to keep track of the huge
page size we use an array of MMU_PAGE_* values. For each supported huge
page size we need to know the hugepte_shift value and have a
pgtable_cache. The hstate or an mmu_huge_psizes index is passed to
functions so that they know which huge page size they should use.
The hugepage sizes 16M and 64K are setup(if available on the hardware) so
that they don't have to be set on the boot cmd line in order to use them.
The number of 16G pages have to be specified at boot-time though (e.g.

Boot initialisation is very complex, with significant numbers of
architecture-specific routines, hooks and code ordering. While significant
amounts of the initialisation is architecture-independent, it trusts the data
received from the architecture layer. This is a mistake, and has resulted in
a number of difficult-to-diagnose bugs.
This patchset adds some validation and tracing to memory initialisation. It
also introduces a few basic defensive measures. The validation code can be
explicitly disabled for embedded systems.
This patch:
Add additional debugging and verification code for memory initialisation.
Once enabled, the verification checks are always run and when required
additional debugging information may be outputted via a mminit_loglevel=
command-line parameter.
The verification code is placed in a new file mm/mm_init.c. Ideally other mm
initialisation code will be moved here over time.

Initially netfilter has had 64bit counters for conntrack-based accounting, but
it was changed in 2.6.14 to save memory. Unfortunately in-kernel 64bit counters are
still required, for example for "connbytes" extension. However, 64bit counters
waste a lot of memory and it was not possible to enable/disable it runtime.
This patch:
- reimplements accounting with respect to the extension infrastructure,
- makes one global version of seq_print_acct() instead of two seq_print_counters(),
- makes it possible to enable it at boot time (for CONFIG_SYSCTL/CONFIG_SYSFS=n),
- makes it possible to enable/disable it at runtime by sysctl or sysfs,
- extends counters from 32bit to 64bit,
- renames ip_conntrack_counter -> nf_conn_counter,
- enables accounting code unconditionally (no longer depends on CONFIG_NF_CT_ACCT),
- set initial accounting enable state based on CONFIG_NF_CT_ACCT
- removes buggy IPCT_COUNTER_FILLING event handling.
If accounting is enabled newly created connections get additional acct extend.
Old connections are not changed as it is not possible to add a ct_extend area
to confirmed conntrack. Accounting is performed for all connections with
acct extend regardless of a current state of "net.netfilter.nf_conntrack_acct".

From: Stefan Assmann <sassmann@suse.de>
Subject: Introduce config option for pci reroute quirks
The config option X86_REROUTE_FOR_BROKEN_BOOT_IRQS is introduced to
enable (or disable) the redirection of the interrupt handler to the boot
interrupt line by default. Depending on the existence of interrupt
masking / threaded interrupt handling in the kernel (vanilla, rt, ...)
and the maturity of the rerouting patch, users can enable or disable the
redirection by default.
This means that the reroute quirk can be applied to any kernel without
changing it.
Interrupt sharing could be increased if this option is enabled. However this
option is vital for threaded interrupt handling, as done by the RT kernel.
It should simplify the consolidation with the RT kernel.
The option can be overridden by either pci=ioapicreroute or
pci=noioapicreroute.

"idle=nomwait" disables the use of the MWAIT
instruction from both C1 (C1_FFH) and deeper (C2C3_FFH)

When MWAIT is unavailable, the BIOS and OS generally
negotiate to use the HALT instruction for C1,
and use IO accesses for deeper C-states.
This option is useful for power and performance
comparisons, and also to work around BIOS bugs
where broken MWAIT support is advertised.

x2apic support. Interrupt-remapping must be enabled before enabling x2apic,
this is needed to ensure that IO interrupts continue to work properly after the
cpu mode is changed to x2apic(which uses 32bit extended physical/cluster
apic id).
On systems where apicid's are > 255, BIOS can handover the control to OS in
x2apic mode. Or if the OS handover was in legacy xapic mode, check
if it is capable of x2apic mode. And if we succeed in enabling
Interrupt-remapping, then we can enable x2apic mode in the CPU.

x86 boot: add code to add BIOS provided EFI memory entries to kernel
Instead of always adding EFI memory map entries (if present) to the
memory map after initially finding either E820 BIOS memory map entries
and/or kernel command line memmap entries, -instead- only add such
additional EFI memory map entries if the kernel boot option:
add_efi_memmap
is specified.
Requiring this 'add_efi_memmap' option is backward compatible with
kernels that didn't load such additional EFI memory map entries in
the first place, and it doesn't override a configuration that tries
to replace all E820 or EFI BIOS memory map entries with ones given
entirely on the kernel command line.

ACPI PM: Add possibility to change suspend sequence
There are some systems out there that don't work correctly with
our current suspend/hibernation code ordering. Provide a workaround
for these systems allowing them to pass 'acpi_sleep=old_ordering' in
the kernel command line so that it will use the pre-ACPI 2.0 ("old")
suspend code ordering.
Unfortunately, this requires us to add a platform hook to the
resuming of devices for recovering the platform in case one of the
device drivers' .suspend() routines returns error code. Namely,
ACPI 1.0 specifies that _PTS should be called before suspending
devices, but _WAK still should be called before resuming them in
order to undo the changes made by _PTS. However, if there is an
error during suspending devices, they are automatically resumed
without returning control to the PM core, so the _WAK has to be
called from within device_resume() in that cases.
The patch also reorders and refactors the ACPI suspend/hibernation
code to avoid duplication as far as reasonably possible.

Contention for scarce PCI memory resources has been growing
due to an increasing number of PCI slots in large multi-node
systems. The kernel currently attempts by default to
allocate memory for all PCI expansion ROMs so there has
also been an increasing number of PCI memory allocation
failures seen on these systems. This occurs because the
BIOS either (1) provides insufficient PCI memory resource
for all the expansion ROMs or (2) provides adequate PCI
memory resource for expansion ROMs but provides the
space in kernel unexpected BIOS assigned P2P non-prefetch
windows.
The resulting PCI memory allocation failures may be benign
when related to memory requests for expansion ROMs themselves
but in some cases they can occur when attempting to allocate
space for more critical BARs. This can happen when a successful
expansion ROM allocation request consumes memory resource
that was intended for a non-ROM BAR. We have seen this
happen during PCI hotplug of an adapter that contains a
P2P bridge where successful memory allocation for an
expansion ROM BAR on device behind the bridge consumed
memory that was intended for a non-ROM BAR on the P2P bridge.
In all cases the allocation failure messages can be very
confusing for users.
This patch provides a new 'pci=norom' kernel boot parameter
that can be used to disable the default PCI expansion ROM memory
resource allocation. This provides a way to avoid the above
described issues on systems that do not contain PCI devices
for which drivers or user-level applications depend on the
default PCI expansion ROM memory resource allocation behavior.

The sequence executed in check_sal_cache_flush:
- pend a timer interrupt
- call SAL_CACHE_FLUSH
- see if interrupt is still pending
can hang HP machines with buggy SAL_CACHE_FLUSH implementations.
Provide a kernel command-line argument to allow users skip this
check if desired. Using this parameter will force ia64_sal_cache_flush
to call ia64_pal_cache_flush() instead of SAL_CACHE_FLUSH.

* 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jbarnes/pci-2.6:
x86 PCI: call dmi_check_pciprobe()
x86/pci: add pci=skip_isa_align command lines.
x86/pci: remove flag in pci_cfg_space_size_ext
x86: fix section mismatch in pci_scan_bus
Remove the rest of the old mac_esp driver. Also ditch the rest of the
machw mechanism, it needs to be replaced by a fake openfirmware tree.

so we don't align the io port start address for pci cards.
also move out dmi check out acpi.c, because it has nothing to do with acpi.
it could spare some calling when we have several peer root buses.
