186c307f00 ACPICA: Add GPE support for dynamically loaded ACPI tables
For all GPEs, including FADT-based and GPE Block Devices, execute
any _PRW methods in the new table, and process any _Lxx/_Exx GPE
methods in the new table. Any runtime GPE that is referred to
by an _Lxx/_Exx method in the new table is immediately enabled.

07bedca29b ACPI: DMI init_set_sci_en_on_resume for multiple Lenovo ThinkPads
Multiple Lenovo ThinkPad models with Intel Core i5/i7 CPUs can
successfully suspend/resume once, and then hang on the second s/r
cycle.

We got confirmation that this was due to a BIOS defect. The BIOS
did not properly set SCI_EN coming out of S3. The BIOS guys
hinted that The Other Leading OS ignores the fact that hardware
owns the bit and sets it manually.

In any case, an existing DMI table exists for machines where this
defect is a known problem. Lenovo promise to fix their BIOS, but
for folks who either won't or can't upgrade their BIOS, allow
Linux to workaround the issue.

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15407
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/532374

Confirmed by numerous testers in the launchpad bug that using
acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable fixes the issue. We add the machines
to acpisleep_dmi_table[] to automatically enable this workaround.

414d3448db x86, acpi/irq: pci device dev->irq is an isa irq not a gsi
Strictly speaking on x86 (where acpi is used) dev->irq must be

5cc4a0f6b7 ACPI: silence kmemcheck false positive
This addresses: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14998

We copy some strings into "event" but we leave the space after the NULL
terminators uninitialized. Later in acpi_bus_receive_event() we copy
the whole struct to another buffer with memcpy(). If the new buffer is
stored on the stack, kmemcheck prints a warning about the unitialized
space after the NULL terminators.

It's true that the space is uninitialized, but it's harmless. The
buffer is only used in acpi_system_read_event() and we don't read past
the NULL terminators.

This patch changes the kmalloc() to kzalloc() so that we initialize the
memory and silence the kmemcheck warning.

0f849d2cc6 ACPICA: Minimize the differences between linux GPE code and ACPICA code base
We have ported Rafael's major GPE changes
(ACPI: Use GPE reference counting to support shared GPEs) into ACPICA code base.
But the port and Rafael's original patch have some differences, so we made
below patch to make linux GPE code consistent with ACPICA code base.

Most changes are about comments and coding styles.
Other noticeable changes are based on:

Rafael: Reduce code duplication related to GPE lookup
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/86237/

Rafael: Always use the same lock for GPE locking
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/90471/

A new field gpe_count in struct acpi_gpe_block_info to record the number
of individual GPEs in block.

1638bca898 ACPI: Reduce ACPI resource conflict message to KERN_WARNING, printk cleanup
By default, ACPI resource conflict messages are logged at level
KERN_ERR. This is a rather high level for a message that is more a
warning than an indication of a real kernel error. Also, KERN_ERR level
messages can appear over some boot splash screens, and this message is
not serious enough to warrant such treatment. Thus, the log level has
been reduced to KERN_WARNING.

57283776b2 ACPI: pci_root: pass acpi_pci_root to arch-specific scan
The acpi_pci_root structure contains all the individual items (acpi_device,
domain, bus number) we pass to pci_acpi_scan_root(), so just pass the
single acpi_pci_root pointer directly.

This will make it easier to add _CBA support later. For _CBA, we need the
entire downstream bus range, not just the base bus number. We have that in
the acpi_pci_root structure, so passing the pointer makes it available to
the arch-specific code.

Previously, we only saved the root bus number, i.e., the beginning of the

It's important to know both the beginning and the end for supporting _CBA
(see PCI Firmware spec, rev 3.0, sec 4.1.3) and so we know the limits for
any possible PCI bus renumbering (we can't renumber downstream buses to be
outside the bus number range claimed by the host bridge).

It's clear from the spec that the bus range is supposed to be in _CRS, but

b7b30de53a ACPI: use _HID when supplied by root-level devices
Previously, we assumed the only Device object immediately below the root
was the \_SB Scope (which the ACPI CA treats as a Device), so we forced
the HID of all such objects to ACPI_BUS_HID ("LNXSYBUS").

However, there are DSDTs that supply root-level Device objects with _HIDs.
This patch makes us pay attention to those _HIDs and only add the synthetic
ACPI_BUS_HID for root-level objects that do not supply their own _HID.

For example, this DSDT: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15605
contains:

    Scope (_SB) {
	...
    }
    Device (AMW0) {
	Name (_HID, EisaId ("PNP0C14"))

5a0e3ad6af include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h
percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.

percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.

  http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py

The script does the followings.

* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.

* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.

* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
  file.

The conversion was done in the following steps.

1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
   files.

2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
   inclusions to around 150 files.

3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.

4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
   e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.

5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
   necessary.

6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.

7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).

   * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
   * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
   * ia64 SMP allmodconfig
   * s390 SMP allmodconfig
   * alpha SMP allmodconfig
   * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig

8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.

Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

222e82ac9f acpi: Support IBM SMBus CMI devices
On some old IBM workstations and desktop computers, the BIOS presents in the
DSDT an SMBus object that is missing the HID identifier that the i2c-scmi
driver looks for. Modify the ACPI device scan code to insert the missing HID
if it finds an IBM system with such an object.

Affected machines: IntelliStation Z20/Z30. Note that the i2c-i801 driver no
longer works on these machines because of ACPI resource conflicts.

bf02bd2590 ACPI / ACPICA: Do not check reference counters in acpi_ev_enable_gpe()
acpi_ev_enable_gpe() should enable the GPE at the hardware level
regardless of the value of the GPE's runtime reference counter.

There are only two callers of acpi_ev_enable_gpe(), acpi_enable_gpe()
and acpi_set_gpe(). The first one checks the GPE's runtime
reference counter itself and only calls acpi_ev_enable_gpe() if it's
equal to one, and the other one is supposed to enable the GPE
unconditionally (if called with ACPI_GPE_ENABLE).

This change fixes the problem in acpi_enable_wakeup_device() where
the GPE will not be enabled for wakeup if it's runtime reference
counter is zero, which is a regression from 2.6.33.

The ACPI processor driver can be built as a module. But it has
pieces of code that should always be built statically into the

The plan is for processor_core.c to contain the static bits while
processor_driver.c contains the module-like bits.

Since the bulk of the code in the current processor_core.c is
module-like, first step is to rename the file to processor_driver.c

Next step will re-create processor_core.c and cherry-pick out

68ca406930 ACPI: delete the "acpi=ht" boot option
acpi=ht was important in 2003 -- before ACPI was
universally deployed and enabled by default in
the major Linux distributions.

At that time, there were a fair number of people who
or chose to, or needed to, run with acpi=off,
yet also wanted access to Hyper-threading.

Today we find that many invocations of "acpi=ht"
are accidental, and thus is it possible that it
is doing more harm than good.

In 2.6.34, we warn on invocation of acpi=ht.
In 2.6.35, we delete the boot option.

o Add the "bad parameter" test against 'type' in

o Make acpi_enable_gpe() only check 'status' for runtime GPEs if
  acpi_ev_enable_gpe() was actually called.

o Make acpi_disable_gpe() return 'status' returned by
  acpi_ev_disable_gpe() and fix a bug where ACPI_GPE_TYPE_WAKE

7bc5e3f2be x86/PCI: use host bridge _CRS info by default on 2008 and newer machines
The main benefit of using ACPI host bridge window information is that
we can do better resource allocation in systems with multiple host bridges,
e.g., http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14183

Sometimes we need _CRS information even if we only have one host bridge,
e.g., https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/341681

Most of these systems are relatively new, so this patch turns on
"pci=use_crs" only on machines with a BIOS date of 2008 or newer.

b67ea76172 PCI / ACPI / PM: Platform support for PCI PME wake-up
Although the majority of PCI devices can generate PMEs that in
principle may be used to wake up devices suspended at run time,
platform support is generally necessary to convert PMEs into wake-up
events that can be delivered to the kernel. If ACPI is used for this
purpose, PME signals generated by a PCI device will trigger the ACPI
GPE associated with the device to generate an ACPI wake-up event that
we can set up a handler for, provided that everything is configured
correctly.

Unfortunately, the subset of PCI devices that have GPEs associated
with them is quite limited. The devices without dedicated GPEs have
to rely on the GPEs associated with other devices (in the majority of
cases their upstream bridges and, possibly, the root bridge) to
generate ACPI wake-up events in response to PME signals from them.

Add ACPI platform support for PCI PME wake-up:
o Add a framework making is possible to use ACPI system notify
  handlers for run-time PM.
o Add new PCI platform callback ->run_wake() to struct
pci_platform_pm_ops allowing us to enable/disable the platform to
generate wake-up events for given device. Implemet this callback
  for the ACPI platform.
o Define ACPI wake-up handlers for PCI devices and PCI root buses and
make the PCI-ACPI binding code register wake-up notifiers for all
PCI devices present in the ACPI tables.
o Add function pci_dev_run_wake() which can be used by PCI drivers to
check if given device is capable of generating wake-up events at
  run time.

3f0be67188 ACPI / ACPICA: Multiple system notify handlers per device
Currently it only is possible to install one system notify handler
per namespace node, but this is not enough for PCI run-time power
management, because we need to install power management notifiers for
devices that already have hotplug notifiers installed. While in
principle this could be handled at the PCI level, that would be
suboptimal due to the way in which the ACPI-based PCI hotplug code is
designed.

For this reason, modify ACPICA so that it is possible to install more
than one system notify handler per namespace node. Namely, make
acpi_install_notify_handler(), acpi_remove_notify_handler() and
acpi_ev_notify_dispatch() use a list of system notify handler objects
associated with a namespace node.

Make acpi_remove_notify_handler() call acpi_os_wait_events_complete()
upfront to avoid a situation in which concurrent instance of
acpi_remove_notify_handler() removes the handler from under us while
we're waiting for the event queues to flush.

9630bdd9b1 ACPI: Use GPE reference counting to support shared GPEs
ACPI GPEs may map to multiple devices. The current GPE interface
only provides a mechanism for enabling and disabling GPEs, making
it difficult to change the state of GPEs at runtime without extensive
cooperation between devices.

Add an API to allow devices to indicate whether or not they want
their device's GPE to be enabled for both runtime and wakeup events.

Remove the old GPE type handling entirely, which gets rid of various
quirks, like the implicit disabling with GPE type setting. This
requires a small amount of rework in order to ensure that non-wake
GPEs are enabled by default to preserve existing behaviour.

d306ebc286 ACPI: Be in TS_POLLING state during mwait based C-state entry
ACPI deep C-state entry had a long standing bug/missing feature, wherein we were sending
resched IPIs when an idle CPU is in mwait based deep C-state. Only mwait based C1 was using
the write to the monitored address to wake up mwait'ing CPU.

This patch changes the code to retain TS_POLLING bit if we are entering an mwait based
deep C-state.

The patch has been verified to reduce the number of resched IPIs in general and also
improves the performance/power on workloads with low system utilization (i.e., when mwait based
deep C-states are being used).

455c0d71d4 ACPI: Fix regression where _PPC is not read at boot even when ignore_ppc=0
Earlier, Ingo Molnar posted a patch to make it so that the kernel would avoid
reading _PPC on his broken T60. Unfortunately, it seems that with Thomas
Renninger's patch last July to eliminate _PPC evaluations when the processor
driver loads, the kernel never actually reads _PPC at all! This is problematic
if you happen to boot your non-T60 computer in a state where the BIOS _wants_
_PPC to be something other than zero.

So, put the _PPC evaluation back into acpi_processor_get_performance_info if
ignore_ppc isn't 1.

370d5cd885 ACPI: fix High cpu temperature with 2.6.32
Since the rewrite of the CPU idle governor in 2.6.32, two laptops have
surfaced where the BIOS advertises a C2 power state, but for some reason
this state is not functioning (as verified in both cases by powertop
before the patch in .32).

The old governor had the accidental behavior that if a non-working state
was chosen too many times, it would end up falling back to C1. The new
governor works differently and this accidental behavior is no longer
there; the result is a high temperature on these two machines.

This patch adds these 2 machines to the DMI table for C state anomalies;
by just not using C2 both these machines are better off (the TSC can be
used instead of the pm timer, giving a performance boost for example).

Commit fe06fba2 (ACPI: dock: add struct dock_station * directly

We passed that interface a stack variable, which is kmemdup'ed
and assigned to the device's platform_data pointer.

Unfortunately, whatever random garbage is in the stack variable
gets coped during the kmemdup, and that leads to broken behavior.

Explicitly zero out the structure before passing it to the API.
