If an skb has nr_frags set to zero but its frag_list is not empty (as
it can happen if software LRO is enabled), and a previous
tcp_read_sock has consumed the linear part of the skb, then
__skb_splice_bits:
(a) incorrectly reports an error and
(b) forgets to update the offset to account for the linear part
Any of the two problems will cause the subsequent __skb_splice_bits
call (the one that handles the frag_list skbs) to either skip data,
or, if the unadjusted offset is greater then the size of the next skb
in the frag_list, make tcp_splice_read loop forever.

Large Receive Offload (LRO) is only appropriate for packets that are
destined for the host, and should be disabled if received packets may be
forwarded. It can also confuse the GSO on output.
Add dev_disable_lro() function which uses the appropriate ethtool ops to
disable LRO if enabled.
Add calls to dev_disable_lro() in br_add_if() and functions that enable
IPv4 and IPv6 forwarding.

Max of promiscuity and allmulti plus positive @inc can cause overflow.
Fox example: when allmulti=0xFFFFFFFF, any caller give dev_set_allmulti() a
positive @inc will cause allmulti be off.
This is not what we want, though it's rare case.
The fix is that only negative @inc will cause allmulti or promiscuity be off
and when any caller makes the counters touch the roof, we return error.
Change of v2:
Change void function dev_set_promiscuity/allmulti to return int.
So callers can get the overflow error.
Caller's fix will be done later.

1. Since we return error to caller, we don't need to print KERN_ERROR,
KERN_WARNING is enough.
2. In dev_set_promiscuity(), if __dev_set_promiscuity() failed, we
return at once.

Permit bonding to function rationally if max_bonds is set to
zero. This will load the module, but create no master devices (which can
be created via sysfs).
Requires some change to bond_create_sysfs; currently, the
netdev sysfs directory is determined from the first bonding device created,
but this is no longer possible. Instead, an interface from net/core is
created to create and destroy files in net_class.

Add NETDEV_BONDING_FAILOVER event to be used in a successive patch
by bonding to announce fail-over for the active-backup mode through the
netdev events notifier chain mechanism. Such an event can be of use for the
RDMA CM (communication manager) to let native RDMA ULPs (eg NFS-RDMA, iSER)
always be aligned with the IP stack, in the sense that they use the same
ports/links as the stack does. More usages can be done to allow monitoring
tools based on netlink events being aware to bonding fail-over.

Selected device feature bits can be propagated to VLAN devices, so we
can make use of TX checksum offload and TSO on VLAN-tagged packets.
However, if the physical device does not do VLAN tag insertion or
generic checksum offload then the test for TX checksum offload in
dev_queue_xmit() will see a protocol of htons(ETH_P_8021Q) and yield
false.
This splits the checksum offload test into two functions:
- can_checksum_protocol() tests a given protocol against a feature bitmask
- dev_can_checksum() first tests the skb protocol against the device
features; if that fails and the protocol is htons(ETH_P_8021Q) then
it tests the encapsulated protocol against the effective device
features for VLANs

skb_splice_bits temporary drops the socket lock while iterating over
the socket queue in order to break a reverse locking condition which
happens with sendfile. This, however, opens a window of opportunity
for tcp_collapse() to aggregate skbs and thus potentially free the
current skb used in skb_splice_bits and tcp_read_sock.
This patch fixes the problem by (re-)getting the same "logical skb"
after the lock has been temporary dropped.

The neighbor table time of last use information is returned in the
incorrect unit. Kernel to user space ABI's need to use USER_HZ (or
milliseconds), otherwise the application has to try and discover the
real system HZ value which is problematic. Linux has standardized on
keeping USER_HZ consistent (100hz) even when kernel is running
internally at some other value.
This change is small, but it breaks the ABI for older version of
iproute2 utilities. But these utilities are already broken since they
are looking at the psched_hz values which are completely different. So
let's just go ahead and fix both kernel and user space. Older
utilities will just print wrong values.

Am I just being particularly dim today, or can the call to
dev->change_rx_flags(dev, IFF_MULTICAST) in dev_change_flags() never
happen?
We've just set dev->flags = flags & IFF_MULTICAST, effectively. So the
condition '(dev->flags ^ flags) & IFF_MULTICAST' is _never_ going to be
true.

Most of the net/core/xxx sysctls are read-only now, but this
goal is achieved with excessive memory consumption in each
namespace - the whole table is cloned and most of the entries
in it are ~= 0222.
Split it into two parts and register (the largest) one at the
read-only root.

When a net namespace is destroyed, some devices (those, not killed
on ns stop explicitly) are moved back to init_net.
The problem, is that this net_ns change has one point of failure -
the __dev_alloc_name() may be called if a name collision occurs (and
this is easy to trigger). This allocator performs a likely-to-fail
GFP_ATOMIC allocation to find a suitable number. Other possible
conditions that may cause error (for device being ns local or not
registered) are always false in this case.
So, when this call fails, the device is unregistered. But this is
*not* the right thing to do, since after this the device may be
released (and kfree-ed) improperly. E. g. bridges require more
actions (sysfs update, timer disarming, etc.), some other devices
want to remove their private areas from lists, etc.
I. e. arbitrary use-after-free cases may occur.
The proposed fix is the following: since the only reason for the
dev_change_net_namespace to fail is the name generation, we may
give it a unique fall-back name w/o %d-s in it - the dev<ifindex>
one, since ifindexes are still unique.
So make this change, raise the failure-case printk loglevel to
EMERG and replace the unregister_netdevice call with BUG().

When a netdev is moved across namespaces with the
'dev_change_net_namespace' function, the 'device_rename' function is
used to fixup kobject and refresh the sysfs tree. The device_rename
function will call kobject_rename and this one will check if there is
an object with the same name and this is the case because we are
renaming the object with the same name.
The use of 'device_rename' seems for me wrong because we usually don't
rename it but just move it across namespaces. As we just want to do a
mini "netdev_[un]register", IMO the functions
'netdev_[un]register_kobject' should be used instead, like an usual
network device [un]registering.
This patch replace device_rename by netdev_unregister_kobject,
followed by netdev_register_kobject.
The netdev_register_kobject will call device_initialize and will raise
a warning indicating the device was already initialized. In order to
fix that, I split the device initialization into a separate function
and use it together with 'netdev_register_kobject' into
register_netdevice. So we can safely call 'netdev_register_kobject' in
'dev_change_net_namespace'.
This fix will allow to properly use the sysfs per namespace which is
coming from -mm tree.

In the ethtool user-space application, tg3 and natsemi over-ride the
default implementation of dump_eeprom(). In both tg3_dump_eeprom() and
natsemi_dump_eeprom(), there is a magic number check which is not
present in the default implementation.
Commit b131dd5d ("[ETHTOOL]: Add support for large eeproms") snipped
the code which copied the ethtool_eeprom structure back to
user-space. tg3 and natsemi are over-writing the magic number field
and then checking it in user-space. With the ethtool_eeprom copy
removed, the check is failing.
The fix is simple. Add the ethtool_eeprom copy back.

ASSERT_RTNL uses mutex_trylock to test whether the rtnl_mutex is
held. This bogus warnings when running in atomic context, which
f.e. happens when adding secondary unicast addresses through
macvlan or vlan or when synchronizing multicast addresses from
wireless devices.
Mid-term we might want to consider moving all address updates
to process context since the locking seems overly complicated,
for now just fix the bogus warning by changing ASSERT_RTNL to
use mutex_is_locked().

Expose dev_id to userspace, because it helps to disambiguate between
interfaces where the MAC address is unique.
This should allow us to simplify the handling of persistent naming for
S390 network devices in udev -- because it can depend on a simple
attribute of the device like the other match criteria, rather than
having a special case for SUBSYSTEMS=="ccwgroup".

None of these files use any of the functionality promised by
asm/semaphore.h. It's possible that they rely on it dragging in some
unrelated header file, but I can't build all these files, so we'll have
fix any build failures as they come up.

This patch effectively reverts commit d0498d9ae1
aka "[NET]: Do not allocate unneeded memory for dev->priv alignment."
It was found to be buggy because of final unconditional += NETDEV_ALIGN_CONST
removal.
For example, for sizeof(struct net_device) being 2048 bytes, "alloc_size"
was also 2048 bytes, but allocator with debugging options turned on started
giving out !32-byte aligned memory resulting in redzones overwrites.
Patch does small optimization in ->priv'less case: bumping size to next
32-byte boundary was always done to ensure ->priv will also be aligned.
But, no ->priv, no need to do that.

The alloc_netdev_mq() tries to produce 32-bytes alignment for both
the net_device itself and its private data. The second alignment is
achieved by adding the NETDEV_ALIGN_CONST to the whole size of
the memory to be allocated.
However, for those devices that do not need the private area, this
addition just makes the net_device weight 1024 + 32 = 1068 bytes,
i.e. consume twice as much memory.
Since loopback device is such (sizeof_priv == 0 for it), and each
net namespace creates one, this can save a noticeable amount of
memory for kernel with net namespaces turned on.
After this set the lo device is actually allocated from a size-1024
kmem cache on i386 box even with NETPOLL and WIRELESS_EXT turned on.

Protocol control sockets and netlink kernel sockets should not prevent the
namespace stop request. They are initialized and disposed in a special way by
sk_change_net/sk_release_kernel.

Make release_net/hold_net noop for performance-hungry people. This is a debug
staff and should be used in the debug mode only.
Add check for net != NULL in hold/release calls. This will be required
later on.

Currently, it is not possible to read/write to an eeprom larger than
128k in size because the buffer used for temporarily storing the
eeprom contents is allocated using kmalloc. kmalloc can only allocate
a maximum of 128k depending on architecture.
Modified ethtool_get/set_eeprom to only allocate a page of memory and
then copy the eeprom a page at a time.

Add the elastic array of void * pointer to the struct net.
The access rules are simple:
1. register the ops with register_pernet_gen_device to get
the id of your private pointer
2. call net_assign_generic() to put the private data on the
struct net (most preferably this should be done in the
->init callback of the ops registered)
3. do not store any private reference on the net_generic array;
4. do not change this pointer while the net is alive;
5. use the net_generic() to get the pointer.
When adding a new pointer, I copy the old array, replace it
with a new one and schedule the old for kfree after an RCU
grace period.
Since the net_generic explores the net->gen array inside rcu
read section and once set the net->gen->ptr[x] pointer never
changes, this grants us a safe access to generic pointers.
Quoting Paul: "... RCU is protecting -only- the net_generic
structure that net_generic() is traversing, and the [pointer]
returned by net_generic() is protected by a reference counter
in the upper-level struct net."

To make some per-net generic pointers, we need some way to address
them, i.e. - IDs. This is simple IDA-based IDs generator for pernet
subsystems.
Addressing questions about potential checkpoint/restart problems:
these IDs are "lite-offsets" within the net structure and are by no
means supposed to be exported to the userspace.
Since it will be used in the nearest future by devices only (tun,
vlan, tunnels, bridge, etc), I make it resemble the functionality
of register_pernet_device().
The new ids is stored in the *id pointer _before_ calling the init
callback to make this id available in this callback.

SKF_ADF_NLATTR searches for a netlink attribute, which avoids manually
parsing and walking attributes. It takes the offset at which to start
searching in the 'A' register and the attribute type in the 'X' register
and returns the offset in the 'A' register. When the attribute is not
found it returns zero.
A top-level attribute can be located using a filter like this

Such an accounting would cost us two more dereferences to get the
percpu variable from the struct net, so I make sock_prot_inuse_get
and _add calls work differently depending on CONFIG_NET_NS - without
it old optimized routines are used.
The per-cpu counter for init_net is prepared in core_initcall, so
that even af_inet, that starts as fs_initcall, will already have the
init_net prepared.

This counter is about to become per-proto-and-per-net, so we'll need
two arguments to determine which cell in this "table" to work with.
All the places, but proc already pass proper net to it - proc will be
tuned a bit later.
Some indentation with spaces in proc files is done to keep the file
coding style consistent.

And redirect sock_prot_inuse_add and _get to use one.
As far as the dereferences are concerned. Before the patch we made
1 dereference to proto->inuse.add call, the call itself and then
called the __get_cpu_var() on a static variable. After the patch we
make a direct call, then one dereference to proto->inuse_idx and
then the same __get_cpu_var() on a still static variable. So this
patch doesn't seem to produce performance penalty on SMP.
This is not per-net yet, but I will deliberately make NET_NS=y case
separated from NET_NS=n one, since it'll cost us one-or-two more
dereferences to get the struct net and the inuse counter.

The inuse counters are going to become a per-cpu array. Introduce an
index for this array on the struct proto.
To handle the case of proto register-unregister-register loop the
bitmap is used. All its bits manipulations are protected with
proto_list_lock and a sanity check for the bitmap being exhausted is
also added.

SIOCADDMULTI/SIOCDELMULTI check whether the driver has a set_multicast_list
method to determine whether it supports multicast. Drivers implementing
secondary unicast support use set_rx_mode however.
Check for both dev->set_multicast_mode and dev->set_rx_mode to determine
multicast capabilities.

Proxy neighbors do not have any reference counting, so any caller
of pneigh_lookup (unless it's a netlink triggered add/del routine)
should _not_ perform any actions on the found proxy entry.
There's one exception from this rule - the ipv6's ndisc_recv_ns()
uses found entry to check the flags for NTF_ROUTER.
This creates a race between the ndisc and pneigh_delete - after
the pneigh is returned to the caller, the nd_tbl.lock is dropped
and the deleting procedure may proceed.
One of the fixes would be to add a reference counting, but this
problem exists for ndisc only. Besides such a patch would be too
big for -rc4.
So I propose to introduce a __pneigh_lookup() which is supposed
to be called with the lock held and use it in ndisc code to check
the flags on alive pneigh entry.

As David noticed, Exported the __pneigh_lookup() to ipv6 module.
The checkpatch generates a warning on it, since the EXPORT_SYMBOL
does not follow the symbol itself, but in this file all the
exports come at the end, so I decided no to break this harmony.

Update: My mailer ate one of Jarek's feedback mails... Fixed the
parameter in netif_set_gso_max_size() to be u32, not u16. Fixed the
whitespace issue due to a patch import botch. Changed the types from
u32 to unsigned int to be more consistent with other variables in the
area. Also brought the patch up to the latest net-2.6.26 tree.
Update: Made gso_max_size container 32 bits, not 16. Moved the
location of gso_max_size within netdev to be less hotpath. Made more
consistent names between the sock and netdev layers, and added a
define for the max GSO size.
Update: Respun for net-2.6.26 tree.
Update: changed max_gso_frame_size and sk_gso_max_size from signed to
unsigned - thanks Stephen!
This patch adds the ability for device drivers to control the size of
the TSO frames being sent to them, per TCP connection. By setting the
netdevice's gso_max_size value, the socket layer will set the GSO
frame size based on that value. This will propogate into the TCP
layer, and send TSO's of that size to the hardware.
This can be desirable to help tune the bursty nature of TSO on a
per-adapter basis, where one may have 1 GbE and 10 GbE devices
coexisting in a system, one running multiqueue and the other not, etc.
This can also be desirable for devices that cannot support full 64 KB
TSO's, but still want to benefit from some level of segmentation
offloading.

There are some place, that calculate the ARP header length. These
calculations are correct, but
a) some operate with "magic" constants,
b) enlarge the code length (sometimes at the cost of coding style),
c) are not informative from the first glance.
The proposal is to introduce a helper, that includes all the good
sides of these calculations.

neigh_update sends skb from neigh->arp_queue while neigh_timer_handler
has increased skbs refcount and calls solicit with the
skb. neigh_timer_handler should not increase skbs refcount but make a
copy of the skb and do solicit with the copy.

The seq_file_operations' dev_mc_seq_xxx callbacks do the same thing as
the dev_seq_xxx ones do, but skip the SEQ_START_TOKEN.
So use the existing exported dev_seq_xxx calls and handle the
SEQ_START_TOKEN in the dev_mc_seq_show().

The neigh_hash_grow() may update the tbl->hash_rnd value, which
is used in all tbl->hash callbacks to calculate the hashval.
Two lookup routines may race with this, since they call the
->hash callback without the tbl->lock held. Since the hash_rnd
is changed with this lock write-locked moving the calls to ->hash
under this lock read-locked closes this gap.

RTM_NEWLINK allows for already existing links to be modified. For this
purpose do_setlink() is called which expects address attributes with a
payload length of at least dev->addr_len. This patch adds the necessary
validation for the RTM_NEWLINK case.
The address length for links to be created is not checked for now as the
actual attribute length is used when copying the address to the netdevice
structure. It might make sense to report an error if less than addr_len
bytes are provided but enforcing this might break drivers trying to be
smart with not transmitting all zero addresses.

IFLA_LINK is no longer a write-only attribute on the kernel side and
must thus be validated. Same goes for the newly introduced
IFLA_LINKINFO.
Fixes undefined behaviour if either of the attributes are not well
formed.

Commit a0a400d79e ("[NET]: dev_mcast:
add multicast list synchronization helpers") from you introduced a new
field "da_synced" to struct dev_addr_list that is not properly
initialized to 0. So when any of the current users (8021q, macvlan,
mac80211) calls dev_mc_sync/unsync they mess the address list for both
devices.
The attached patch fixed it for me and avoid future problems.

It causes recursive locking in IPV6 because unlike other
neighbour layer clients, it even needs neighbour cache
entries to send neighbour soliciation messages :-(
We'll have to find another way to fix this race.

There is a race in Linux kernel file net/core/dev.c, function dev_close.
The function calls function dev_deactivate, which calls function
dev_watchdog_down that deletes the watchdog timer. However, after that, a
driver can call netif_carrier_ok, which calls function
__netdev_watchdog_up that can add the watchdog timer again. Function
unregister_netdevice calls function dev_shutdown that traps the bug
!timer_pending(&dev->watchdog_timer). Moving dev_deactivate after
netif_running() has been cleared prevents function netif_carrier_on
from calling __netdev_watchdog_up and adding the watchdog timer again.

In do_setlink() a single notification is sent at the end of the
function if any modification occured. If the address has been changed,
another notification is sent.
Both of them is required because originally only the NETDEV_CHANGEADDR
notification was sent and although device state change implies address
change, some programs may expect the original notification. It remains
for compatibity.
If set_operstate() is called from do_setlink(), it doesn't send a
notification, only if it is called from rtnl_create_link() as earlier.

Frank Blaschka provided the bug report and the initial suggested fix
for this bug. He also validated this version of this fix.
The problem is that the access to neigh->arp_queue is inconsistent, we
grab references when dropping the lock lock to call
neigh->ops->solicit() but this does not prevent other threads of
control from trying to send out that packet at the same time causing
corruptions because both code paths believe they have exclusive access
to the skb.
The best option seems to be to hold the write lock on neigh->lock
during the ->solicit() call. I looked at all of the ndisc_ops
implementations and this seems workable. The only case that needs
special care is the IPV4 ARP implementation of arp_solicit(). It
wants to take neigh->lock as a reader to protect the header entry in
neigh->ha during the emission of the soliciation. We can simply
remove the read lock calls to take care of that since holding the lock
as a writer at the caller providers a superset of the protection
afforded by the existing read locking.
The rest of the ->solicit() implementations don't care whether the
neigh is locked or not.

We use a percpu variable named flow_hash_info, which holds 12 bytes.
It is currently marked as ____cacheline_aligned, which makes linker
skip space to properly align this variable.

This alignement is quite unproductive, and removing it reduces the

In order to correlate audit records to an individual login add a session
id. This is incremented every time a user logs in and is included in
almost all messages which currently output the auid. The field is
labeled ses= or oses=

when using pktgen to send delay packets the module prints repeatedly
to the kernel log:

This is probably just a debugging item left in and should not be

Reuse the existing logic for multicast list synchronization for the
unicast address list. The core of dev_mc_sync/unsync are split out as
__dev_addr_sync/unsync and moved from dev_mcast.c to dev.c. These are
then used to implement dev_unicast_sync/unsync as well.
I'm working on cleaning up Intel's FCoE stack, which generates new MAC
addresses from the fibre channel device id assigned by the fabric as
per the current draft specification in T11. When using such a
protocol in a VLAN environment it would be nice to not always be
forced into promiscuous mode, assuming the underlying Ethernet driver
supports multiple unicast addresses as well.

A userspace program may wish to set the mark for each packets its send
without using the netfilter MARK target. Changing the mark can be used
for mark based routing without netfilter or for packet filtering.
It requires CAP_NET_ADMIN capability.

Convert packet schedulers to use the netlink API. Unfortunately a gradual
conversion is not possible without breaking compilation in the middle or
adding lots of casts, so this patch converts them all in one step. The
patch has been mostly generated automatically with some minor edits to
at least allow seperate conversion of classifiers and actions.

During network namespace stop process kernel side netlink sockets
belonging to a namespace should be closed. They should not prevent
namespace to stop, so they do not increment namespace usage
counter. Though this counter will be put during last sock_put.
The raplacement of the correct netns for init_ns solves the problem
only partial as socket to be stoped until proper stop is a valid
netlink kernel socket and can be looked up by the user processes. This
is not a problem until it resides in initial namespace (no processes
inside this net), but this is not true for init_net.
So, hold the referrence for a socket, remove it from lookup tables and
only after that change namespace and perform a last put.

The garbage collection function receive the dst_ops structure as
parameter. This is useful for the next incoming patchset because it
will need the dst_ops (there will be several instances) and the
network namespace pointer (contained in the dst_ops).
The protocols which do not take care of the namespaces will not be
impacted by this change (expect for the function signature), they do
just ignore the parameter.

seq_open_net requires that first field of the seq->private data to be
struct seq_net_private. In reality this is a single pointer to a

Move static rules_ops & rules_mod_lock to the struct net, register the
pernet subsys to init them and enjoy the fact that the core rules
infrastructure works in the namespace.
Real IPv4 fib rules virtualization requires fib tables support in the
namespace and will be done seriously later in the patchset.

The patch extends the different fib rules API in order to pass the
network namespace pointer. That will allow to access the different
tables from a namespace relative object. As usual, the pointer to the
init_net variable is passed as parameter so we don't break the
network.

protocol. Most of them are renamed from memory accounting functions
for stream protocols. At the same time, some stream memory accounting
functions are removed since other functions do same thing.

memory accounting calls to network core functions. Moreover, present
memory accounting call is renamed to new accounting call.
Finally we replace present memory accounting calls with new interface
in TCP and SCTP.

print_mac() used many most net drivers and format_addr() used by
net-sysfs.c are very similar and they can be intergrated.
format_addr() is also identically redefined in the qla4xxx iscsi
driver.
Export a new function sysfs_format_mac() to be used by net-sysfs,
qla4xxx and others in the future. Both print_mac() and
sysfs_format_mac() call _format_mac_addr() to do the formatting.
Changed print_mac() to use unsigned char * to be consistent with
net_device struct's dev_addr. Added buffer length overrun checking
as suggested by Joe Perches.

sk_forward_alloc being signed, we should take care of divides by
SK_STREAM_MEM_QUANTUM we do in sk_stream_pages() and
__sk_stream_mem_reclaim()
This patchs introduces SK_STREAM_MEM_QUANTUM_SHIFT, defined
as ilog2(SK_STREAM_MEM_QUANTUM), to be able to use right
shifts instead of plain divides.
This should help compiler to choose right shifts instead of
expensive divides (as seen with CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE=y on x86)

I'm actually surprised at how much was involved. At first glance it
appears that the neighbour table data structures are already split by
network device so all that should be needed is to modify the user
interface commands to filter the set of neighbours by the network
namespace of their devices.
However a couple things turned up while I was reading through the
code. The proxy neighbour table allows entries with no network
device, and the neighbour parms are per network device (except for the
defaults) so they now need a per network namespace default.
So I updated the two structures (which surprised me) with their very
own network namespace parameter. Updated the relevant lookup and
destroy routines with a network namespace parameter and modified the
code that interacts with users to filter out neighbour table entries
for devices of other namespaces.
I'm a little concerned that we can modify and display the global table
configuration and from all network namespaces. But this appears good
enough for now.
I keep thinking modifying the neighbour table to have per network
namespace instances of each table type would should be cleaner. The
hash table is already dynamically sized so there are it is not a
limiter. The default parameter would be straight forward to take care
of. However when I look at the how the network table is built and
used I still find some assumptions that there is only a single
neighbour table for each type of table in the kernel. The netlink
operations, neigh_seq_start, the non-core network users that call
neigh_lookup. So while it might be doable it would require more
refactoring than my current approach of just doing a little extra
filtering in the code.

The neigh_del_timer() looks sane - it removes the timer and
(conditionally) puts the neighbor. I expected, that the
neigh_add_timer() is symmetrical to the del one - i.e. it
holds the neighbor and arms the timer - but it turned out
that it was not so.
I think, that making them look symmetrical makes the code
more readable.

Some of ctl variables are going to be on the struct
net. Here's the way to adjust the ->data pointer on the
ctl_table-s to point on the right variable.
Since some pointers still point on the global variables,
I keep turning the write bits off on such tables.
This looks to become a common procedure for net sysctls,
so later parts of this code may migrate to some more
generic place.

Making them per-namespace is required for the following
two reasons:
First, some ctl values have a per-namespace meaning.
Second, making them writable from the sub-namespace
is an isolation hole.
So I introduce the pernet operations to create these
tables. For init_net I use the existing statically
declared tables, for sub-namespace they are duplicated
and the write bits are removed from the mode.

The previous move of the the UDP inDatagrams counter caused each
peek of the same packet to be counted separately. This may be
undesirable.
This patch fixes this by adding a bit to sk_buff to record whether
this packet has already been seen through skb_recv_datagram. We
then only increment the counter when the packet is seen for the
first time.
The only dodgy part is the fact that skb_recv_datagram doesn't have
a good way of returning this new bit of information. So I've added
a new function __skb_recv_datagram that does return this and made
skb_recv_datagram a wrapper around it.
The plan is to eventually replace all uses of skb_recv_datagram with
this new function at which time it can be renamed its proper name.

Currently it is possible for two processes to peek on the same socket
and end up incrementing the error counter twice for the same packet.
This patch fixes it by making skb_kill_datagram return whether it
succeeded in unlinking the packet and only incrementing the counter
if it did.

The appropriate path is prepared right inside this function. It

Since the path is modified, it is put on the stack, to avoid
possible races with multiple calls to neigh_sysctl_register() : it
is called by protocols and I didn't find any protection in this
case. Did I overlooked the rtnl lock?.
The stack growth of the neigh_sysctl_register() is 40 bytes. I
believe this is OK, since this is not that much and this function
is not called with the deep stack (device/protocols register).
The device's name is stored on the template to free it later.
This will help with the net namespaces, as each namespace should
have its own set of these ctls.
Besides, this saves ~350 bytes from the neigh template :)

This mainly removes the err variable, as this call always
return the same error code (-ENOBUFS).
Besides, I moved the call to kmalloc() from the *t declaration
into the code (this is confusing when a variable is initialized
with the result of some call) and removed unneeded comment near
the error path.

Currently this size is 16, but as the comment says this
is so only because all the chains (except one) has the
length 1. I think, that some day this may change, so
growing this hash will be much easier.

The sock_wake_async() performs a bit different actions
depending on "how" argument. Unfortunately this argument
ony has numerical magic values.
I propose to give names to their constants to help people
reading this function callers understand what's going on
without looking into this function all the time.
I suppose this is 2.6.25 material, but if it's not (or the
naming seems poor/bad/awful), I can rework it against the
current net-2.6 tree.

This function references sk->sk_prot->xxx for many times.
It turned out, that there's so many code in it, that gcc
cannot always optimize access to sk->sk_prot's fields.
After saving the sk->sk_prot on the stack and comparing
disassembled code, it turned out that the function became
~10 bytes shorter and made less dereferences (on i386 and
x86_64). Stack consumption didn't grow.
Besides, this patch drives most of this function into the
80 columns limit.

This patch adds a separate workqueue for cleaning up a network
namespace. If we use the keventd workqueue to execute cleanup_net(),
there is a problem to unregister devices in IPv6. Indeed the code
that cleans up also schedule work in keventd: as long as cleanup_net()
hasn't return, dst_gc_task() cannot run and as long as dst_gc_task() has
not run, there are still some references pending on the net devices and
cleanup_net() can not unregister and exit the keventd workqueue.

After the previous prep work this just consists of removing checks
limiting the code to work in the initial network namespace, and
updating rtmsg_ifinfo so we can generate events for devices in
something other then the initial network namespace.
Referring to network other network devices like the IFLA_LINK
and IFLA_MASTER attributes do, gets interesting if those network
devices happen to be in other network namespaces. Currently
ifindex numbers are allocated globally so I have taken the path
of least resistance and not still report the information even
though the devices they are talking about are invisible.
If applications start getting confused or when ifindex
numbers become local to the network namespace we may need
to do something different in the future.

Before I can enable rtnetlink to work in all network namespaces I need
to be certain that something won't break. So this patch deliberately
disables all of the rtnletlink methods in everything except the
initial network namespace. After the methods have been audited this
extra check can be disabled.

The sock_valbool_flag() helper is used in setsockopt to
set or reset some flag on the sock. This helper is required
in the net/socket.c only, so move it there.
Besides, patch two places in sys_setsockopt() that repeat
this helper functionality manually.
Since this is not a bugfix, but a trivial cleanup, I
prepared this patch against net-2.6.25, but it also
applies (with a single offset) to the latest net-2.6.

We have a number of copies of dst_discard scattered around the place
which all do the same thing, namely free a packet on the input or
output paths.
This patch deletes all of them except dst_discard and points all the
users to it.
The only non-trivial bit is decnet where it returns an error.
However, conceptually this is identical to the blackhole functions
used in IPv4 and IPv6 which do not return errors. So they should
either all return errors or all return zero. For now I've stuck with
the majority and picked zero as the return value.
It doesn't really matter in practice since few if any driver would
react differently depending on a zero return value or NET_RX_DROP.

Many-many code in the kernel initialized the timer->function
and timer->data together with calling init_timer(timer). There
is already a helper for this. Use it for networking code.
The patch is HUGE, but makes the code 130 lines shorter
(98 insertions(+), 228 deletions(-)).

Replace all lock_cpu_hotplug/unlock_cpu_hotplug from the kernel and use
get_online_cpus and put_online_cpus instead as it highlights the
refcount semantics in these operations.
The new API guarantees protection against the cpu-hotplug operation, but
it doesn't guarantee serialized access to any of the local data
structures. Hence the changes needs to be reviewed.
In case of pseries_add_processor/pseries_remove_processor, use
cpu_maps_update_begin()/cpu_maps_update_done() as we're modifying the
cpu_present_map there.

init_net is used added as a parameter to a lot of old API calls, f.e.
ip_dev_find. These calls were exported as EXPORT_SYMBOL. So, export init_net
as EXPORT_SYMBOL to keep networking API consistent.

When unregistering the rtnl_link_ops, all existing devices using
the ops are destroyed. With nested devices this may lead to a
use-after-free despite the use of for_each_netdev_safe() in case
the upper device is next in the device list and is destroyed
by the NETDEV_UNREGISTER notifier.
The easy fix is to restart scanning the device list after removing
a device. Alternatively we could add new devices to the front of
the list to avoid having dependant devices follow the device they
depend on. A third option would be to only restart scanning if
dev->iflink of the next device matches dev->ifindex of the current
one. For now this seems like the safest solution.
With this patch, the veth rtnl_link_ops unregistration can use
rtnl_link_unregister() directly since it now also handles destruction
of multiple devices at once.

The neightbl_fill_parms() is called under the write-locked tbl->lock
and accesses the parms->dev. The negh_parm_release() calls the
dev_put(parms->dev) without this lock. This creates a tiny race window
on which the parms contains potentially stale dev pointer.
To fix this race it's enough to move the dev_put() upper under the
tbl->lock, but note, that the parms are held by neighbors and thus can
live after the neigh_parms_release() is called, so we still can have a
parm with bad dev pointer.
I didn't find where the neigh->parms->dev is accessed, but still think
that putting the dev is to be done in a place, where the parms are
really freed. Am I right with that?

Both NetLabel and SELinux (other LSMs may grow to use it as well) rely
on the 'iif' field to determine the receiving network interface of
inbound packets. Unfortunately, at present this field is not
preserved across a skb clone operation which can lead to garbage
values if the cloned skb is sent back through the network stack. This
patch corrects this problem by properly copying the 'iif' field in
__skb_clone() and removing the 'iif' field assignment from
skb_act_clone() since it is no longer needed.
Also, while we are here, put the assignments in the same order as the
offsets to reduce cacheline bounces.

This finally adds the code in net_rx_action() to break out of the
->poll()'ing loop when a napi_disable() is found to be pending.
Now, even if a device is being flooded with packets it can be cleanly
brought down.

When used function put_cmsg() to copy kernel information to user
application memory, if the memory length given by user application is
not enough, by the bad length calculate of msg.msg_controllen,
put_cmsg() function may cause the msg.msg_controllen to be a large
value, such as 0xFFFFFFF0, so the following put_cmsg() can also write
data to usr application memory even usr has no valid memory to store
this. This may cause usr application memory overflow.

The skb_morph function only freed the data part of the dst skb, but leaked
the auxiliary data such as the netfilter fields. This patch fixes this by
moving the relevant parts from __kfree_skb to skb_release_all and calling
it in skb_morph.
It also makes kfree_skbmem static since it's no longer called anywhere else
and it now no longer does skb_release_data.
Thanks to Yasuyuki KOZAKAI for finding this problem and posting a patch for
it.

The pktgen_output_ipsec() function can unlock this lock twice
due to merged error and plain paths. Remove one of the calls
to spin_unlock.
Other possible solution would be to place "return 0" right
after the first unlock, but at this place the err is known
to be 0, so these solutions are the same except for this one
makes the code shorter.

The request_sock_queue's listen_opt is either vmalloc-ed or
kmalloc-ed depending on the number of table entries. Thus it
is expected to be handled properly on free, which is done in
the reqsk_queue_destroy().
However the error path in inet_csk_listen_start() calls
the lite version of reqsk_queue_destroy, called
__reqsk_queue_destroy, which calls the kfree unconditionally.
Fix this and move the __reqsk_queue_destroy into a .c file as
it looks too big to be inline.
As David also noticed, this is an error recovery path only,
so no locking is required and the lopt is known to be not NULL.
reqsk_queue_yank_listen_sk is also now only used in
net/core/request_sock.c so we should move it there too.

[NET]: Allow netdev REGISTER/CHANGENAME events to fail
makes the register_netdevice_notifier() handle the error from the
NETDEV_REGISTER event, sent to the registering block.
The bad news is that in this case the notifier block is
not removed from the list, but the error is returned to the
caller. In case the caller is in module init function and
handles this error this can abort the module loading. The
notifier block will be then removed from the kernel, but
will be left in the list. Oops :(
I think that the notifier block should be removed from the
chain in case of error, regardless whether this error is
handled by the caller or not. In the worst case (the error
is _not_ handled) module will not receive the events any
longer.

If CONFIG_NET_NS is not set, the only namespace is possible.
This patch removes list of pernet_operations and cleanups code a bit.
This list is not needed if there are no namespaces. We should just call
->init method.
Additionally, the ->exit will be called on module unloading only. This
case is safe - the code is not discarded. For the in/kernel code, ->exit
should never be called.

This patch fixes a small memory leak. Default fib rules can be deleted by
the user if the rule does not carry FIB_RULE_PERMANENT flag, f.e. by
ip rule flush
Such a rule will not be freed as the ref-counter has 2 on start and becomes
clearly unreachable after removal.

The struct proto has the per-cpu "inuse" counter, which is handled
with a special care. All the handling code hides under the ifdef
CONFIG_SMP and it introduces some code duplication and makes it
look worse than it could.

"struct proto" currently uses an array stats[NR_CPUS] to track change on
'inuse' sockets per protocol.
If NR_CPUS is big, this means we use a big memory area for this.
Moreover, all this memory area is located on a single node on NUMA
machines, increasing memory pressure on the boot node.
In this patch, I tried to :
- Keep a fast !CONFIG_SMP implementation
- Keep a fast CONFIG_SMP implementation for often used protocols
(tcp,udp,raw,...)
- Introduce a NUMA efficient implementation
Some helper macros are defined in include/net/sock.h
These macros take into account CONFIG_SMP
If a "struct proto" is declared without using DEFINE_PROTO_INUSE /
REF_PROTO_INUSE
macros, it will automatically use a default implementation, using a
dynamically allocated percpu zone.
This default implementation will be NUMA efficient, but might use 32/64
bytes per possible cpu
because of current alloc_percpu() implementation.
However it still should be better than previous implementation based on
stats[NR_CPUS] field.
When a "struct proto" is changed to use the new macros, we use a single
static "int" percpu variable,
lowering the memory and cpu costs, still preserving NUMA efficiency.

sg_mark_end() overwrites the page_link information, but all users want
__sg_mark_end() behaviour where we just set the end bit. That is the most
natural way to use the sg list, since you'll fill it in and then mark the
end point.
So change sg_mark_end() to only set the termination bit. Add a sg_magic
debug check as well, and clear a chain pointer if it is set.

The setup_net is called for the init net namespace
only (int the CONFIG_NET_NS=n of course) from the __init
function, so mark it as __net_init to disappear with the
caller after the boot.
Yet again, in the perfect world this has to be under
#ifdef CONFIG_NET_NS, but it isn't guaranteed that every
subsystem is registered *after* the init_net_ns is set
up. After we are sure, that we don't start registering
them before the init net setup, we'll be able to move
this code under the ifdef.

The namespace creation/destruction code is never called
if the CONFIG_NET_NS is n, so it's OK to move it under
appropriate ifdef.
The copy_net_ns() in the "n" case checks for flags and
returns -EINVAL when new net ns is requested. In a perfect
world this stub must be in net_namespace.h, but this
function need to know the CLONE_NEWNET value and thus
requires sched.h. On the other hand this header is to be
injected into almost every .c file in the networking code,
and making all this code depend on the sched.h is a
suicidal attempt.

When the new pernet something (subsys, device or operations) is
being registered, the init callback is to be called for each
namespace, that currently exitst in the system. During the
unregister, the same is to be done with the exit callback.
However, not every pernet something has both calls, but the
check for the appropriate pointer to be not NULL is performed
inside the for_each_net() loop.
This is (at least) strange, so tune this.

At this point nobody calls the sk_alloc(() with zero_it == 0,
so remove unneeded checks from it.

The sk_prot_alloc() already performs all the stuff needed by the
sk_clone(). Besides, the sk_prot_alloc() requires almost twice
less arguments than the sk_alloc() does, so call the sk_prot_alloc()
saving the stack a bit.

The security_sk_alloc() and the module_get is a part of the
object allocations - move it in the proper place.
Note, that since we do not reset the newly allocated sock
in the sk_alloc() (memset() is removed with the previous
patch) we can safely do this.
Also fix the error path in sk_prot_alloc() - release the security
context if needed.

We have a __GFP_ZERO flag that allocates a zeroed chunk of memory.
Use it in the sk_alloc() and avoid a hand-made memset().
This is a temporary patch that will help us in the nearest future :)

The sock object is allocated either from the generic cache with
the kmalloc, or from the proc->slab cache.
Move this logic into an isolated set of helpers and make the
sk_alloc/sk_free look a bit nicer.
