mm: remove legacy install_special_mapping() code
All relevant architectures had already been converted to the new interface (which just has an underscore in front of the name - not very imaginative naming), this just force-converts the stragglers. The modern interface is almost identical to the old one, except instead of the page pointer it takes a "struct vm_special_mapping" that describes the mapping (and contains the page pointer as one member), and it returns the resulting 'vma' instead of just the error code. Getting rid of the old interface also gets rid of some special casing, which had caused problems with the mremap extensions to "struct vm_special_mapping". ftrace: Rewrite of function graph tracer
Up until now, the function graph tracer could only have a single user attached to it. If another user tried to attach to the function graph tracer while one was already attached, it would fail. Allowing function graph tracer to have more than one user has been asked for since 2009, but it required a rewrite to the logic to pull it off so it never happened. Until now! There's three systems that trace the return of a function. That is kretprobes, function graph tracer, and BPF. kretprobes and function graph tracing both do it similarly. The difference is that kretprobes uses a shadow stack per callback and function graph tracer creates a shadow stack for all tasks. The function graph tracer method makes it possible to trace the return of all functions. As kretprobes now needs that feature too, allowing it to use function graph tracer was needed. BPF also wants to trace the return of many probes and its method doesn't scale either. Having it use function graph tracer would improve that. By allowing function graph tracer to have multiple users allows both kretprobes and BPF to use function graph tracer in these cases. This will allow kretprobes code to be removed in the future as it's version will no longer be needed. Note, function graph tracer is only limited to 16 simultaneous users, due to shadow stack size and allocated slots. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iIoEABYIADIWIQRRSw7ePDh/lE+zeZMp5XQQmuv6qgUCZpbWlxQccm9zdGVkdEBn b29kbWlzLm9yZwAKCRAp5XQQmuv6qgtvAP9jxmgEiEhz4Bpe1vRKVSMYK6ozXHTT 7MFKRMeQqQ8zeAEA2sD5Zrt9l7zKzg0DFpaDLgc3/yh14afIDxzTlIvkmQ8= =umuf -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'ftrace-v6.11' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/trace/linux-trace Pull ftrace updates from Steven Rostedt: "Rewrite of function graph tracer to allow multiple users Up until now, the function graph tracer could only have a single user attached to it. csky: convert to generic syscall table
The uapi/asm/unistd_32.h and asm/syscall_table_32.h headers can now be generated from scripts/syscall.tbl, which makes this consistent with the other architectures that have their own syscall.tbl. csky has two architecture specific system calls, which I add to the generic table. The time32, stat64 and rlimit entries in the syscall_abis_32 line are for system calls that were part of the generic ABI when arch/csky got added but are no longer enabled by default for new architectures. Both the user visible side of asm/unistd.h and the internal syscall table in the kernel should have the same effective contents after this. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> |

clone3: drop __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 macro
When clone3() was introduced, it was not obvious how each architecture deals with setting up the stack and keeping the register contents in a fork()-like system call, so this was left for the architecture maintainers to implement, with __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 defined by those that already implement it. Five years later, we still have a few architectures left that are missing clone3(), and the macro keeps getting in the way as it's fundamentally different from all the other __ARCH_WANT_SYS_* macros that are meant to provide backwards-compatibility with applications using older syscalls that are no longer provided by default. Address this by reversing the polarity of the macro, adding an __ARCH_BROKEN_SYS_CLONE3 macro to all architectures that don't already provide the syscall, and remove __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 from all the other ones. csky: drop asm/gpio.h wrapper

syscalls: mmap(): use unsigned offset type consistently
Most architectures that implement the old-style mmap() with byte offset use 'unsigned long' as the type for that offset, but microblaze and riscv have the off_t type that is shared with userspace, matching the prototype in include/asm-generic/syscalls.h. Make this consistent by using an unsigned argument everywhere. This changes the behavior slightly, as the argument is shifted to a page number, and an user input with the top bit set would result in a negative page offset rather than a large one as we use elsewhere. For riscv, the 32-bit sys_mmap2() definition actually used a custom type that is different from the global declaration, but this was missed due to an incorrect type check. csky, hexagon: fix broken sys_sync_file_range
Both of these architectures require u64 function arguments to be passed in even/odd pairs of registers or stack slots, which in case of sync_file_range would result in a seven-argument system call that is not currently possible. The system call is therefore incompatible with all existing binaries. While it would be possible to implement support for seven arguments like on mips, it seems better to use a six-argument version, either with the normal argument order but misaligned as on most architectures or with the reordered sync_file_range2() calling conventions as on arm and powerpc. kprobe/ftrace: bail out if ftrace was killed
If an error happens in ftrace, ftrace_kill() will prevent disarming kprobes. Eventually, the ftrace_ops associated with the kprobes will be freed, yet the kprobes will still be active, and when triggered, they will use the freed memory, likely resulting in a page fault and panic. This behavior can be reproduced quite easily, by creating a kprobe and then triggering a ftrace_kill(). For simplicity, we can simulate an ftrace error with a kernel module like [1]: [1]: https://github.com/brenns10/kernel_stuff/tree/master/ftrace_killer sudo perf probe --add commit_creds sudo perf trace -e probe:commit_creds # In another terminal make sudo insmod ftrace_killer.ko # calls ftrace_kill(), simulating bug # Back to perf terminal # ctrl-c sudo perf probe --del commit_creds After a short period, a page fault and panic would occur as the kprobe continues to execute and uses the freed ftrace_ops. While ftrace_kill() is supposed to be used only in extreme circumstances, it is invoked in FTRACE_WARN_ON() and so there are many places where an unexpected bug could be triggered, yet the system may continue operating, possibly without the administrator noticing. If ftrace_kill() does not panic the system, then we should do everything we can to continue operating, rather than leave a ticking time bomb. Makefile: remove redundant tool coverage variables
Now Kbuild provides reasonable defaults for objtool, sanitizers, and profilers. Remove redundant variables. kbuild: use $(src) instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for source directory
Kbuild conventionally uses $(obj)/ for generated files, and $(src)/ for checked-in source files. It is merely a convention without any functional difference. In fact, $(obj) and $(src) are exactly the same, as defined in scripts/Makefile.build: src := $(obj) When the kernel is built in a separate output directory, $(src) does not accurately reflect the source directory location. While Kbuild resolves this discrepancy by specifying VPATH=$(srctree) to search for source files, it does not cover all cases. For example, when adding a header search path for local headers, -I$(srctree)/$(src) is typically passed to the compiler. This introduces inconsistency between upstream and downstream Makefiles because $(src) is used instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for the latter. To address this inconsistency, this commit changes the semantics of $(src) so that it always points to the directory in the source tree. Going forward, the variables used in Makefiles will have the following meanings: $(obj) - directory in the object tree $(src) - directory in the source tree (changed by this commit) $(objtree) - the top of the kernel object tree $(srctree) - the top of the kernel source tree Consequently, $(srctree)/$(src) in upstream Makefiles need to be replaced with $(src). csky: use initializer for struct vm_unmapped_area_info
Future changes will need to add a new member to struct vm_unmapped_area_info. This would cause trouble for any call site that doesn't initialize the struct. Currently every caller sets each member manually, so if new members are added they will be uninitialized and the core code parsing the struct will see garbage in the new member. It could be possible to initialize the new member manually to 0 at each call site. This and a couple other options were discussed, and a working consensus (see links) was that in general the best way to accomplish this would be via static initialization with designated member initiators. Having some struct vm_unmapped_area_info instances not zero initialized will put those sites at risk of feeding garbage into vm_unmapped_area() if the convention is to zero initialize the struct and any new member addition misses a call site that initializes each member manually. It could be possible to leave the code mostly untouched, and just change the line: struct vm_unmapped_area_info info to: struct vm_unmapped_area_info info = {}; However, that would leave cleanup for the members that are manually set to zero, as it would no longer be required. So to be reduce the chance of bugs via uninitialized members, instead simply continue the process to initialize the struct this way tree wide. This will zero any unspecified members. Move the member initializers to the struct declaration when they are known at that time. Leave the members out that were manually initialized to zero, as this would be redundant for designated initializers. mm: Remove broken pfn_to_virt() on arch csky/hexagon/openrisc
Remove the broken pfn_to_virt() on architectures csky/hexagon/openrisc. The pfn_to_virt() on those architectures takes PFN instead of PA as the input to macro __va(), with PAGE_SHIFT applying to the converted VA, which is not right, especially when there's a non-zero offset in __va(). [1] The broken pfn_to_virt() was noticed when checking how page_to_virt() is unfolded on x86. It turns out that the one in linux/mm.h instead of in asm-generic/page.h is compiled for x86. However, page_to_virt() in asm-generic/page.h is found out expanding to pfn_to_virt() with a bug described above. The pfn_to_virt() is found out not right as well on architectures csky/hexagon/openrisc. Since there's no single caller on csky/hexagon/openrisc to pfn_to_virt() and there are functions doing similar things as pfn_to_virt() -- - pfn_to_kaddr() in asm/page.h for csky, - page_to_virt() in asm/page.h for hexagon, and - page_to_virt() in linux/mm.h for openrisc, just delete the pfn_to_virt() on those architectures. The pfn_to_virt() in asm-generic/page.h is not touched in this patch as it's referenced by page_to_virt() in that header while the whole header is going to be removed as a whole due to no one including it. Introduce cpu_dcache_is_aliasing() across all architectures
Introduce a generic way to query whether the data cache is virtually aliased on all architectures. Its purpose is to ensure that subsystems which are incompatible with virtually aliased data caches (e.g. FS_DAX) can reliably query this. For data cache aliasing, there are three scenarios dependending on the architecture. Here is a breakdown based on my understanding: A) The data cache is always aliasing: * arc * csky * m68k (note: shared memory mappings are incoherent ? SHMLBA is missing there.) * sh * parisc B) The data cache aliasing is statically known or depends on querying CPU state at runtime: * arm (cache_is_vivt() || cache_is_vipt_aliasing()) * mips (cpu_has_dc_aliases) * nios2 (NIOS2_DCACHE_SIZE > PAGE_SIZE) * sparc32 (vac_cache_size > PAGE_SIZE) * sparc64 (L1DCACHE_SIZE > PAGE_SIZE) * xtensa (DCACHE_WAY_SIZE > PAGE_SIZE) C) The data cache is never aliasing: * alpha * arm64 (aarch64) * hexagon * loongarch (but with incoherent write buffers, which are disabled since commit |

mm: Introduce flush_cache_vmap_early()
The pcpu setup when using the page allocator sets up a new vmalloc mapping very early in the boot process, so early that it cannot use the flush_cache_vmap() function which may depend on structures not yet initialized (for example in riscv, we currently send an IPI to flush other cpus TLB). But on some architectures, we must call flush_cache_vmap(): for example, in riscv, some uarchs can cache invalid TLB entries so we need to flush the new established mapping to avoid taking an exception. So fix this by introducing a new function flush_cache_vmap_early() which is called right after setting the new page table entry and before accessing this new mapping. This new function implements a local flush tlb on riscv and is no-op for other architectures (same as today). vgacon, arch/*: remove unused screen_info definitions
A number of architectures either kept the screen_info definition for historical purposes as it used to be required by the generic VT code, or they copied it from another architecture in order to build the VGA console driver in an allmodconfig build. The mips definition is used by some platforms, but the initialization on jazz is not needed. Now that vgacon no longer builds on these architectures, remove the stale definitions and initializations. c-sky: Remove now superfluous sentinel element from ctl_talbe array
This commit comes at the tail end of a greater effort to remove the empty elements at the end of the ctl_table arrays (sentinels) which will reduce the overall build time size of the kernel and run time memory bloat by ~64 bytes per sentinel (further information Link : https://lore.kernel.org/all/ZO5Yx5JFogGi%2FcBo@bombadil.infradead.org/) Remove sentinel from alignment_tbl ctl_table array. This removal is safe because register_sysctl_init implicitly uses ARRAY_SIZE() in addition to checking for the sentinel. CET consists of two related security features: shadow stacks and indirect branch tracking. This series implements just the shadow stack part of this feature, and just for userspace. The main use case for shadow stack is providing protection against return oriented programming attacks. It works by maintaining a secondary (shadow) stack using a special memory type that has protections against modification. When executing a CALL instruction, the processor pushes the return address to both the normal stack and to the special permission shadow stack. Upon RET, the processor pops the shadow stack copy and compares it to the normal stack copy.
